Etymology
The name Dubhaine originally has its origins in a Cagilian dialect which translates proximately as "women of dark countenance". It is usually presupposed to derive from the unyielding character of the women of the family, particularly their grim determination in battle. However several of the more prominent Dubhaine women have also been noted for their lustrous black locks.

Family History
Families wax and families wane, it's the nature of nobility. And yet the blood of heroes cannot be long denied.
Long content to remain among the faceless ranks of the lesser nobility of the Cagilan Empire on Atamara, it seems that an adventurous strain infected the younger generation and filled their hearts with the desire for fame and glory. Measuring its wealth in the bounty of its daughters, rarely has a family been so blessed with female offspring - each often sired by a different father, for Clan Dubhaine was one of the few families in the Cagilan Empire that traced its lineage exclusive through the female line. The Dubhaine menfolk were generally content to seek their fortunes rather than inherit them, although it still is not unusual for the matriarch to provide a small grant to kickstart their career.
Matriarch Sorcha Dubhaine was heavily involved with Imperial court politics and had little time for the day-to-day affairs of the Empire, but she still somehow found time to rule her family with a rod of iron. Her three eldest daughters entered into a compact to increase the fame of their house by spreading across the known world in search of adventure, the first generation to make their mark on the world.
Lady Brigdha remained at home to guard the family interests whilst Lady Aoifa took ship to the Colonies in search of adventure. She was followed not long afterwards by their younger brother Cathal and in time the siblings became a major force in the politics and religious struggles of the southern realms.
Meanwhile Lady Moira established herself in Fontan where a turbulent career saw her achieve high office as Supreme Justice and Marchioness of Negev. In May of 1009 she relocated the family seat to her estates but later that year a series of obscure disasters overtook the Clan and they were believed extinguished.
However in December 1010 it was discovered that what remained of the family estates had been relocated to Ashforth and that Lady Moira's daughter Dame Rhidhana had been raised there under the protection of those loyal to her mother's memory. She subsequently took service with Duke Elberan.
By strange coincidence Sir Cathal was once more seen in Alebad in command of a company of Church Militant Templars.
There have also been persistent - if unsubstantiated - rumours that Lady Moira is in exile on Dwilight - and more recently Beluaterra - living as a common adventurer. Stranger things have been known.
