Chato

Chato is a not-quite-impoverished region filled with gullies and ravines. The most distinguishing feature that allows its people to survive is the very one which makes it a poor farming region: thick, rich red clay deposits that allow its potters and artisans to make some of the finest pottery in the area.

There are only a few hamlets of several hundred people scattered around Chato, each near a clay deposit that is their life's blood. With so few trees in the area, all the houses are made of red clay bricks. Such houses are fire-proof and water-proof, although earthquakes can result in severe damage and hardship.

Peasant families in Chato are often built on interdependent tiers of farmers and potters or brick-makers; in times of hardship, the potters of the family travel across to Chagasu or Jagla to trade for enough food to satisfy the tax collectors (who said tax collectors only collect taxes?). In times of starvation, they do so to keep their family from starving to death, although at this point difficult choices must be made.

Most of pottery produced in Chato is bought by traveling merchants. With Aja so close by, it is only natural that a larger proportion of the traders originate from Aja.
