Origin
Childhood
As the notorious pirate lord Captain Oscar Osoro's first child, Haide's youth was spent at sea aboard the Osos Dorados fleet. She was forced to participate in raids from a young age and was treated violently and cruelly.
However, Haide had a stubborn streak of innate thoughtfulness that no brutality could quash. In raids, she would often let victims escape when she could do so without tipping off her captain. At times, she would push back against her captain when he ordered particularly cruel attacks of no strategic importance. Naturally, these efforts were always poorly received, leading Oscar to declare Haide a failure and an unworthy successor.
Growing up, Haide always felt more at home with the regular sailors of the fleet than the elite. Several of the pirates would look out for her and protect her from Oscar when they could, and she considered them role models in a way. Aside from them, Haide and her younger sister Eztli would fend for themselves while the ships were at harbor.
As children, Eztli would pickpocket from strangers in Itau to buy food a commoner woman's tavern. When she and Haide were caught, the woman—Miss Denise—gave them work at the tavern. Whenever they were in harbor from then on, Haide and Eztli would stay with Miss Denise and her daughter Gen.
When Haide was in her mid-teens, the Captain was particularly cruel to Eztli. She and Haide ran away to live with Miss Denise and Gen permanently. But the reprieve was short-lived and ended violently. Haide and Eztli were taken back to the pirate ship, spirits crushed, and life was harder than ever before.
Lost Memories
After Haide released dozens of prisoners who were meant to be executed, Oscar sent Haide and Eztli to destroy an unarmed vessel of refugees in the Gold Sea to prove themselves as heirs. It was a test that would result in hundreds of deaths and serve no strategic purpose. Initially, Haide refused, but eventually relented. She sent Eztli to Eponllyn protect her from the carnage and then moved to take the vessel.
However, as they approached the vessel, Haide attempted to abort the mission. The crew proceeded regardless. An unexpected and terrible storm suddenly overtook both ships and there was a shockwave of light. Haide's ship was destroyed, and she washed up on the coast of Golden Farrow in Tol Goldora with no recollection of her life before.
Rough Start in Tol Goldora
After breaking into the Menagerie of the Damned in Mozyr, Haide was poisoned by a monster claw and touched a daemon ring that once belonged to the Zuma General. This combination of events brought back her memories and with it, a new perspective of its impact on her.
Soon after, Haide became Viscountess of Mozyr, moving into Arkone Manor. She started a relationship with Nalaya Everwind, then Viscountess of Knyazes, and got involved in an embittered debate with the Marshal of the Golden Host, Furiae de Haguns, about Furiae's cruel treatment of peasants. Haide became a courtier in an effort to resolve issues with commoners and peasants non-violently. However, the debate ended in Furiae ambushing and severely beating both girls.
With Furiae's reputation as a good marshal amongst the realm, Haide and Nalaya's story was not believed for some time. Eventually, though, Furiae's deception and poor moral character became impossible to ignore. Furiae was stripped of her position as Marshal of the Golden Host, and Nalaya took her place. To Haide's surprise, she was named Vice Marshal as well.
Captain Returns
Unbeknownst to Haide, Captain Oscar Osoro found out that Haide and Eztli were still alive. Since their presumed passing, he had only fallen deeper into his worship of the Void Gods, going as far as to legitimize his son in Beluaterra to have an "heir" for a spell and hiring a necromancer to make undead attack Tol Goldora.
Oscar's undead kidnapped then-Marshal Nalaya and held her captive, where he threatened her should Haide not return to him in three weeks. He also revealed that he had Haide's childhood love, Gen, as his prisoner.
Marshal of the Golden Host
Because of the trauma Nalaya endured during her time in captivity, Nalaya necessarily took a step back from her position as Marshal of the Golden Host. Haide was named Marshal in her stead just as a series of rogue invasions swarmed the realm.
These were during Oscar's allotted three weeks, and Oscar sent undead that once again slaughtered Nalaya's unit, nearly killed then-Stratarch Svari Storme, and ravaged Tol Goldora. Finally, Haide agreed to meet Oscar.
It was also during this time that Haide earned the nickname "the Whore Marshal" during a conflict with Richard Shepherd, who swore to assassinate her (and Calypso and Nalaya) and was soon after banned from Tol Goldora. After this event, Haide and Nalaya decided that Haide would keep the role of Marshal indefinitely.
Killing the Captain
With the help of Nalaya, Vestarch Calypso Hwitt, and Tidespeaker Edelyn Luitolf, Haide arranged to meet Oscar at a brothel in Itau. To their surprise, Gen—who was pregnant—was also there.
Very quickly, a fight broke out during which Oscar summoned undead. Despite Haide's desire to capture Oscar alive, the other three women did not agree. Nalaya dealt the final blow, killing Oscar.
Institution of Wardens of the Passes
With the help of Nalaya, Haide created a new defense strategy for Tol Goldora which involved naming several "Wardens of the Passes" at the places where enemies most frequently entered Tol Goldora. The original passes were the Mountains (Ser Aeron Daubney), the Peaks (Ser Godric Kubo), and the Plains (Dame Mary Elizabeth).
Zuma Rebellion, Plague, and Invasion
When rebellion broke out amongst the Zuma, refugees and "Experiments" escaped Zuma regions and went ravaging across all of Dwilight. Due to Tol Goldora's location, they were the first to be hit. Despite the fact that Haide had been training to be a courtier and a diplomat, during this state of emergency, she became a warrior and cavalier.
As Marshal, Haide and the Golden Host fought the first victory against a horde of daimon Experiments. Not long after, Westgard asked for assistance dealing with a horde of Experiments. Haide led a small team into Westgard lands to do so.
Stratarchy and Motherhood
Haide and Nalaya decided to adopt Gen and Oscar's son, who they named Juhan. Nalaya stepped down as Stratarch to focus on raising the child, and Haide was elected as Stratarch.
Rulership and Relocation
After ex-Royal and Duke Solomon Greybrook allowed Golden Farrow to starve as he constructed even more statues to himself, Haide and others confronted him. A plot came out in which Solomon planned to take several nobles to Luria Nova.
In an effort to challenge him, Autarch Lucius Navaar dropped his title and initiated an election. Solomon and his followers left anyway. Haide entered the race and won on the platform of reimagining Tol Goldora as an oligarchy, removing Astrum’s Vasilif, Xaphen Poe, and moving Tol Goldora to new lands. She won.
Interactions
Character
Haide's curiosity and impulsivity frequently lands her in hot water. She never learned how to navigate polite society and can come across as irreverent (sometimes intentionally but usually not), usually by cussing way too much. Miss Denise taught Haide to cuss as a way to be heard, considering their location in a pirate city and Haide's small size.
She cares deeply for people and will go to great lengths to avoid harming others, even peasants and commoners, who she feels a connection with due to her relationship with Miss Denise and Gen, as well as her forced raiding as a child. In particular, she feels a strong impulse to protect the people she loves or perceives as innocent, even to the detriment of herself. Despite this, she has no issue answering violence with violence when absolutely necessary.
While she used to be able to stay calm and collected in overwhelming situations, since recovering her memories, she's prone to episodes of dissociation and panic.
Appearance
Haide is very small (5'0") but athletic and has many visible scars, particularly on her back. She's prone to fidgeting with anything she can get her hands on and thus usually clasps her hands behind her back when trying to appear in control.
As is typical of Osoros, her eyes are gray-brown and her hair is dark and unruly with several small braids throughout. Her skin is deeply tanned and freckled from life at sea and she has several piercings in each ear. She usually wears pants and a shirt and favors darker colors. Overall, she typically dresses fairly "masculine," unlike her little sister.
Interest in Monsters
Since taking over the Menagerie of the Damned, Haide has developed a strange relationship with the captive monsters, treating them as pets. Overtime, she's learned how to train some of them and developed different tools to help command them.
Most notably, using a crystal that she found in Barrow Peaks, Haide used alchemy to create a small object that looks like fire when hit with light. These can be used to herd monsters.
