Behind this fortification comes first the military district and then the market area. The military district houses recruitment centers, forges and barracks for the soldiers and provides the protection for the bureaucratic inner area. Beyond that the chaos of the market area reigns sovereign over the streets, alleys and squares. In Avamar it is possible to buy goods arriving via caravans from the most distant places of the East Continent and even goods arriving on ships that ply the ocean. The whole culture of the Sirion River basin is traded with Sirion and Sir Temple in the north and at the Elven Bay in Al Amarah and Karbala in the south, providing probably the biggest known market with routes established since Sirion was a colonial empire. Avamar is the gate that allows commercial intermingling of cultures and races. Spies and intrigue are endemic. While this hybrid culture permeates the city, traditional regions like Slimbar remain protected deeper within Sirion.

At the heart of the city rises the central fortification. Once known as The Ivory Tower, this fortified castle assumes aspects of an imperial palace and its white towers are the highest ones in the city. Guards with powerful telescopes keep watch from the towers in all directions. Open only to the elite city guard, nobles and their families, certain scholars, high ranking officials and honored guests, the area is a tranquil paradise closed behind an inner wall. It holds libraries, museums, gardens, squares, fountains, statues, columns and noble houses.

Immediately outside the inner walls, this old district is an administrative area housing bureaucratic buildings and the houses of officials. The architecture here is a mixture of ancient elven style and more recent human construction. The Blood Hall for which the district is named, is a public tournament ground and training hall, providing covered seating for hundreds of Spectators. As a front line city, martial prowess is strongly encouraged in Avamar for noble and commoner alike. Public competitions and martial shows are staged there regularly to promote this martial spirit.

It's hard to discern where the market ends to give place to the harbor. The smell of fish and tar invades the nostrils. The bright colors give way to the shabbiest ones. Along Avamarian shores the Sirion river receives the greatest flow of ships traveling and unloading their goods, coming both from the sea and from up river to make fortunes. With the demands of this trade, the harbor area boasts warehouses, cheap inns, flophouses and many impressive brothels that tout their wares loudly and visibly from the doorstep.

Avamar Region Description

The city of Avamar stands like a great gaunt sentinel at the mouth of the Sirion river. It is the first line of defence against the barbarian human realms of the south. It has four great estates, each named in the ancient Elvish with a name that is meant to emphasize Avamars unyielding opposition to invaders.

Angbarad (The Iron Fortress)

This massive fortress guards the southern walls and gate of Avamar. This is the point at which Avamar is most vulnerable. This is the gate that must not fall. The south gate leads to a finely engineered stone bridge that spans the Sirion river and leads to the barbarian lands of the south.

Thorom Tirith (The Eagle's Guard)

At the heart of the city rises the central fortification. Once known as The Ivory Tower, this fortified castle assumes aspects of an imperial palace and its white towers are the highest ones in the city. Guards with powerful telescopes keep watch from the towers in all directions. Open only to the elite city guard, nobles and their families, certain scholars, high ranking officials and honored guests, the area is a tranquil paradise closed behind an inner wall. It holds libraries, museums, gardens, squares, fountains, statues, columns and noble houses.

Seregrond (The Blood Hall)

Immediately outside the inner walls, this old district is an administrative area housing bureaucratic buildings and the houses of officials. The architecture here is a mixture of ancient elven style and more recent human construction. The Blood Hall for which the district is named, is a public tournament ground and training hall, providing covered seating for hundreds of Spectators. As a front line city, martial prowess is strongly encouraged in Avamar for noble and commoner alike. Public competitions and martial shows are staged there regularly to promote this martial spirit.

Gwathannon (The Death Gate)

This is the fortification that guards the eastern approaches to the city and also protects the port and docks of Avamar. It's walls bear fire throwing catapults to devastate any hostile fleet. Around it has grown the harbor area and red district.
