===History===

Aquilegia is seeking to expand and to catalyze an evolution of Sanguis Astroism into a more diverse and flavorful community, as well as to formulate an ideal concept of what exactly defines a "theocracy" (Read the [[Aquilegia/Concept|Concept of Aquilegia]] for more information). We need nobles of diverse backgrounds to contribute to this democratic process of exchanging ideas and effecting change. We would gladly welcome a wide array of nobles: Critical thinkers, strong warriors, able statesmen, shrewd traders, and ascetic monks and/or nuns too.

Aquilegia occupies a unique niche on Dwilight. Its capital of Flowrestown is the fourth overall largest and richest city on Dwilight, and the peninsula that connects it to the continent is accessible through very few points. Such geographical isolation, coupled with the mountains to the west, makes Aquilegia potentially one of the best geographically defensible realms on Dwilight. All that is required are those intrepid and loyal nobles who would be willing to work for the realization of the vision of a powerful realm in the mideastern Dwilight.

Oversight, as given in the [[Aquilegian Constitution|constitution]], is the authority of the Asterion, however in almost all cases practical and immediate power rests within the rights of the independent dukes. Although the official paperwork lists Aquilegia as a theocracy, such a designation is subject to many interpretations. What makes Aquilegia unique is that it adheres to the feudal tradition in that dukes are responsible for their lords and ducal knights, and lords are responsible for their knights, but at the same time it incorporates some democratic aspects, as is evidenced by the Senate's role.

Voting is very important in Aquilegia. Individual voices are respected, and are heard, but one must first speak. The power of the popular vote is given to all nobles of Aquilegia, in equal weight for all regardless of position. Popular votes are used in most general diplomatic considerations and civil laws, but most importantly, in the process of representative election.

Aquilegia

A small realm with ambitions of expansion, it is a theocracy of Astromancy. Occupying the geographically unique Flow Peninsula, our realm seeks active and contributive nobles to rebuild Aquilegia's power after the Plague.

Its capital of Flowrestown is the fourth overall largest and richest city on Dwilight, and the peninsula that connects it to the continent is accessible through very few points. Such geographical isolation, coupled with the Divide Mountains to the west, make Aquilegia potentially one of the best geographically defensible realms on Dwilight.

History

Originally founded as a Democratic Theocracy Aquilegia has gone through frequent periods of strife internally and from outside its borders. Its founders were idealist Morekians with the intention of building a powerful realm in the Flow Peninsula.

In the Summer of 9 YD, Aquilegia was swiftly taken by a lethal plague. More can be read in the Dwilight University's historical article "The Plague of Aquilegia" by Dean Bowie Ironsides.

In the Winter of 10 YD, the Viper Legion launched a coup d'etat against the theocracy leading to a turbulent civil war. The Vipers ultimately lost and the Theocrats restored Aquilegia to peace. Two Chronologies are available for this event; one submitted to the Department of History, the other to the newspaper Sanguine Times. There is also a memoir on the subject by Dean Bowie Ironsides called the "Reflections on the Aquilegion Civil War".

Religion

As a theocracy, Aquilegia is subject to Astromancy. The position of High Inquisitor is to be appointed by the Archbishop on recommendation of the church. It is illegal with a 50 gold fine to found a new religion.

Military

The Holy Minister of War will direct all military matters of Aquilegia in private. Orders derived from the Holy Minister will be sent out to the army by the Marshal or Vice-Marshal.

Tactics will be decided by the Marshal on the circumstance of the campaign.

The Holy Minister shall conduct the Marshal, and the Marshal shall conduct the army. This is the gist of the military sphere of Aquilegia.

Armies

  • After the plague, in the Autumn of 9 YD, Lord Bowie Ironsides was elected Holy Minister of War. He sponsored the Viper Legion of Aquilegia and demanded it uphold an image of strength, worthiness, dedication and experience. The Viper Legion was dissolved at the end of the Winter of 10 YD after defeat in the Aquilegion Civil War.

Politics

Aquilegia is a theocracy of Astromancy with a government reflecting the faith's hierarchy. The Archbishop of Aquilegia is in control of all national and international affairs, and is under no other authority other then the Church of Sanguis Astroism.

The realm is run by a College of Cardinals which is made up of the Archbishop, the High Inquisitor, the Cardinal of Finance, the Holy Minister of War, the Duke of Flowrestown and other respected and prominent nobles of the realm. The Lords of Aquilegia also have their own forum to manage the realm's bureaucracy.

The positions of Cardinal of Finances and Holy Minister of War are elected once a month. The offices of Aquilegia are held individually, which means that the ruler has no authority over the war department and the war department has no authority under the rulers department. The Cardinal of Finance has full authority over its own office and the ruler has no say over the Cardinal of Finance's trade affairs.

  • By referendum in Autumn of 10 YD, the Cardinal of Finances position is now appointed.

The High Inquisitor's Department falls under a different set of rules, the church has full authority over the High Inquisitor office and selects the High Inquisitor with the Archbishop's consent.

Culture

Aquilegia proudly hosts and sponsors two campuses of the Dwilight University and a guildhouse for the Keepers of Lore. Local culture as well as popular culture is encouraged.

The realm also celebrates seasonal festivals.
