Description

Geography

Sitting on the south-east edge of the Silver Lake in the center of Atamara, Elroth's fair size is somewhat dwarfed by the major cities close by. From the water's edge, you can see the lights of close-by Barad Gardor, as well as the major cities of Barad Falas and Barad Lacirith. On a clear day to the north, you can pick out the peaks of the tallest buildings of Barad Riel against the mighty mountain range of Moramroth.

Sizeable mountains can also be seen past Barad Falas, but there are some gentler hills closer by, with the border between Elroth and Anfalas following the contours of the Anfalas hills. With those hills come mixed blessings - much of the prettiest Elroth landscape can be found in that area, but the locals will tell frightening stories of the monsters and undead that appear to rise from those hills and threaten them.

Elroth's other area of beauty is the western waterline, where the lake forms a shallow inlet, bordered on one side by Beleriel and the other by Elroth. Summer days see the area populated by children, paddling in the water and terrorizing the water life.

The region's position between Barad Gardor and Barad Falas, and its easily traversed low-lying land, make it a busy thoroughfare. Most of the people that visit Elroth do so fleetingly as they continue on to one or other of those two great cities.

Industry and Commerce

Those that do stay in Elroth will be more likely to see evidence of the industries that make the wealth of the townsland, than the farmlands that provide ample food for its citizens. The main industry in Elroth is clothing, with wool and hide from the animals that graze in the fields being cleaned and prepared with water from the lake before being processed in the busy townsland areas. Much of it is then sold in Barad Gardor and the markets by the Menedor quays, the rest being used locally or sold in Elroth's marketplace. This cloth industry also makes banners, and supplies cloth to various other banner manufacturers in the realm. The region takes its name from this industry - long before the townsland grew to its current size, locals farmed elk and made cloth from their hides and velvet-clad antlers. The region of the elk cloth is what became known as Elroth.

Other industries include weaving and brewing. Stanley Middleton is a well-known brewer, famous for his brandies, most notably the cherry brandy that is exported as far as Dwilight, and Seaton Laverock provides much of the region's cheaper ales for local consumption, large quantities being drunk by the commoners in the rather downtrodden City Road Arms, and in the Tollbar Tavern along the busy routes through the townsland. Nobles are more often found in Hillside, a rather more exclusive drinking establishment away to the south-west, or The Slayer's Head, a busy but expensive option on the main road.

Away from the major routes and habitation can be found a number of farms, some of which will sell their produce direct to visitors. There is a large warehouse to the south which contains the region's major food stores, much of which will be sent or sold to Barad Falas or other cities, or sold in the marketplace.

Culture and Religion

One pastime enjoyed by nobles and commoners alike is Skat, though no official rules exist anywhere and visitors are encouraged to avoid playing for money, lest they leave the region empty-handed. One-and-thirty is another popular game preferred by the simpler and less competitive people, but seen as a little base by most nobles.

Elroth has various significant amenities, boasting weapon and armour smiths and trader supplies, as well as a guild for scouts. With these military provisions, and with two recruitment centres in the region, many young men in the townsland area of Elroth grow up to be soldiers or work in the military. Locals place high value on those who fight for the region and for the duchy. In general, the military community and the farming community keep a distance from one another, and troubles in the region have often in the past arisen from disagreements between the two.

There are also some temples to meet the religious needs of the region, for Elroth has religious influence from both Magna Serpaensism and the Way of the Warrior Saints.

Summary

Elroth, then, is a thriving townsland boasting a number of industries but sits in the shadow of the great cities around the lake. Unlike the cities, though, it can also offer a relaxed pace of life to the south and west, and a greater amount of farmland. It is not the busiest, wealthiest, or most picturesque of regions, but it provides the visitor and local alike with a varied wealth of opportunity.
