History

The former breadbasket of the Duchy of Bisquez. The last eruption of Mnt. Sinclair devastated it’s once famed farmland, and over half of the province’s famous horse breeders were wiped out. The area now survives mainly on whaling and boat building.

Description

The remote coastal region of Bitana has long been a haven for smugglers, bandits, pirates and other disreputable characters and has only recently been tamed enough to be incorporated into the realm of Darka.

The remote and ragged coastline of Bitana hides a multitude of hidden caves, secluded coves and rocky landing points which have for centuries been used for illicit trading between the locals and those from further afield. It's quiet shores have often been the first landfall of wanderers, travelers, explorers and those sea-farers for whom life at home had become altogether too uncomfortable for reasons best not investigated too closely.

Between the bountiful sea, the rich farmland in the foothills of Mount Sinclair and the scrubland between them food in Bitana is plentiful. Bitana's cuisine is varied and surprisingly rich; infused with influences from all over Atamara and beyond. It's primitive towns and villages invariably have a fine selection of inns and taverns which do a brisk trade in fine cooking and second-hand goods of dubious origin.

The people of Bitana are deeply suspicious of authority and are notoriously crafty and streetwise. While they appreciate the newly found protection and stability provided by Darkan law they resent the same law when it interferes with their own traditional pastimes of smuggling and petty thieving. However, as time passes and their prosperity grows under Darkan rule their protests grow slowly quieter and increasingly they are satisfied, even proud, to call themselves Darkans.

This region has a temple of Darkanism or has a significant portion of its population following Darkanism.
