Margrave Gavin Malcolm Wilde was a Cauldron Master of Shadowdale, Lord of Montijo, Ainanist, sword-fighting Champion, and food entrepreneur.
Born and raised in Ibladesh, Gavin left his family domains at the age of seventeen to make a name for himself. Matching his age, Gavin took seventeen of his father's bannermen as his own and headed out to start his career. Gavin eventually ended up in Shadowdale where he first served Akesh Temple as a knight. Gavin was granted the lordship of Montijo twelve days into his service to Shadowdale, after its previous Margrave, Blazor Zahnbalotia, had complained that Montijo produced next to no gold and as such stepped down. Gavin sent a letter to the Shadow King of Shadowdale at that time, Lindow Moonsun, and made his case on how to turn the economical situation in Montijo around. Shadow King Lindow found Gavin's arguments to be compelling, and as such appointed him to the region. Under Gavin's governance, Montijo was often found to be the highest yielding gold producer among the non-city regions of Shadowdale, mainly competing with the region of Evora.
Gavin found his place in battle and in duels, and as such sought to continuously improve the related skills. Initially Gavin spent a lot time at the Karbala academy, but he later moved on to the academies of Krimml where he spent most of his time and gold on tutors, mainly because of the reconstruction of the realm, where Shadow Regent Maccio Aurelle changed the capital of Shadowdale from Karbala to Krimml to centralize the location of the capital. Gavin attended as many tournaments he possibly could, eventually ending up as sword-contest Champion of the tournament Alexandria held in Kalmar.
Gavin had a brief stint as the Marshal of the Shadow Legion early in his career, but once he realized that Grey Exarch Armsworth had put too many of his own duties on Gavin, Gavin quickly resigned from the position in protest and vowed to not take another high position within Shadowdale's military hierarchy unless its structure changed.
In his active years, Gavin was seen fielding the cavalry unit Blue Sashed Riders from day one of his service till his last. Originally consisting of his father's old bannermen, the ranks quickly filled with eager and proud Shadowdalians as Gavin's renown spread. Out of the seventeen bannermen that had been reassigned to serve Gavin, only three returned back to Ibladesh once their liege left active duty. The Blue Sashed Riders all wore pointy, conical, high helmets with nasal guards. The riders all wore heavy chain mail from top to down, with steel pauldrons and splint armour covering the rider's arms and shoulders. Across the chest, each rider wore a blue sash. Each rider wore a spear with white and blue tassels near the spear tip. The horses wore face masks of steel and chain barding, covered by blue fabric. The blue and white in the uniforms is representing the colours of House Wilde.
Gavin had a couple of friends and acquaintances, of which the most notable friendship was that with Duke Edmund Calder. Both Gavin and Edmund officially joined Shadowdale on the same day, with Edmund serving Evora and Gavin Akesh Temple. Once Gavin got appointed as Margrave of Montijo, Edmund moved from Evora to serve Montijo. In their first meeting in Montijo, the two sparred with Gavin being the victor. The spar itself would become the foundation of which the friendship would continue to build upon. The two of them would spar when they met, if time allowed for it. Edmund left Gavin's service as a knight of Montijo, to become the Margrave of Karbala as well as Duke of the Spider's Throne, and with that, Gavin entered Edmund's service as a vassal lord. Gavin was proud over his former knight's success, and not particularly surprised over Edmund's advancement. When Edmund swore his oath of fealty, Gavin had prophesied that the roles would be reversed at one point in the future. Edmund never managed to best Gavin in single combat.
Gavin ran for Shadowdale's throne on two occasions; When Shadow King Lindow got removed, and when Shadow Regent Maccio stepped down. Gavin used the same platform in both elections. Gavin's platform centered around two points: safety and healthcare. If coronated as ruler of Shadowdale, Gavin would make sure to overhaul the streets of Shadowdale's cities by making them broader. This was to ensure that Shadowdale's people could stagger home from their watering holes in safety without running the risk of being trampled to death of carriages on the street. This was the first point, with the second point being free alcohol and beverages to the people. Gavin did not receive much support in either election. In the second election, Tormentor Brigdha suggested Gavin to run for Cauldron Master instead. Gavin took her advice and would later become Cauldron Master of Shadowdale.
In Montijo, Gavin had a plethora of chicken farms, and as such went on to establish Hot and Wilde Fried Chicken. The "Margrave's Secret Blend of Herbs and Spices", Gavin's original recipe used to flavour the fried chicken, is a trade secret he unfortunately brought with him to his death, but there are still dedicated explorers out to find and decipher the mix of herbs. Hot and Wilde Chicken offered a menu which items usually were named after nobles, titles, or places. The "Calder Classic", The "Chicken Grey Exarch", and "Montijo Munchies" are all examples of this.
Gavin was a staunch Ainanist, and established the second temple ever of Ainanism in Montijo.
Gavin died in a duel to death against Rearden Arylon, Lord Speaker of Sirion, Governor of Sir Temple. Gavin challenged Sirion's Lord Speaker to a duel after finding out that the Lord Speaker had claimed Gavin's sword, the Long-Lost Sword of the Lords, as his own. Gavin had lost the sword in Elmbar a few days earlier, and when the Lord Speaker and his Sirionites came into Shadowdale's domains, Gavin challenged him to a duel to death due to the theft of Gavin's sword, and that the Lord Speaker trespassed in Montijo. Gavin phrased the challenge in such a way that the Lord Speaker had no way to reject it, and keep his honor intact. Eventually, this would lead to Gavin's death, but he died protecting his domains, friends and core beliefs until his last breath. The Lord Speaker stripped the Whispering Ring of Wisdom from Gavin's corpse.
