User talk:Danaris/SMA Guideline Lecture

From BattleMaster Wiki

Honestly, I don't believe the game provides alternatives for these. The game tells you 500cs vs 1000cs, it doesn't tell you X soldiers vs Y monsters. It doesn't, and often, there's no way of knowing the extent of a battle other than by these numbers. Turns? The game only mentions the time on the received message page and on the user page, nowhere else. One can't even be sure if the turn change is sunrise or sunset, as that's only written on those pages too, and for those who aren't close to Germany its trouble to remember which means the start of the day and which doesn't. As for the day, its not even written anywhere, so you can simply drop that idea as no one has any point of reference. I don't think it's alright to expect players to compensate for when the game lacks. For me SMA means no dumb badgers and no "lulz" or anything of the like, but if the player has to take more time to find a way to make his content acceptable than he did to write what he had to say, then that's just not acceptable as people will simply chose not to write anything at all for lack of time or it not being worth the trouble, considerably harming realm interaction (which is key to making the realm fun for anyone not involved in the decision-making). -Chénier 15:08, 14 December 2008 (CET)

You should be able to use IC any term the game provides to you IC. I do not believe the game really uses the word "turns" very often. (Only during travel, so far as I can tell: "You should arrive there in about 6 hours, i.e. at the next turn.") A lot of people try and avoid direct use of the word "turns" on Dwilight, and to some extent on other islands, too. People can realize that it is not a way people would talk at all. CS, on the other hand, is a deeply ingrained term that is central to combat. Its provided on every scout report, battle report, huge battle report, etc. Its there, and it will be used. Trying to get people to not use the term CS is pretty futile without getting rid of it from the game system itself. But then what would you change it to, some other nebulous term? Or just get rid of it altogether? --Indirik 15:21, 15 December 2008 (CET)
For CS, it would go a long way just to take the extra second to type out "combat strength". As for the rest, SMA means "talk and act like a noble." That's it. No noble would know about turns, or particular combat strength numbers, or particular numbers for prestige and honour. You can talk about comparative prestige, honour, and combat strength, though. In any case, this was just a response to a particular player's question to me that I wanted to save for later; I was hoping to edit it somewhat before doing anything else with it. --Anaris 03:38, 16 December 2008 (CET)
Well, then, if I might discuss it further and add to your lines of thought... I'm completely against using 'turns', after all, the first thing you read when you log into the game is the clock, right above your unread messages. It takes two seconds to calculate "Alright, sun rises at 1am my time and sets at 1pm my time". I never had any problems with it in my armies. And when you use sunrise, sunset, etc, people start paying attention to it. As for CS, honour, prestige, as long as it is shown in our IC pages, I take it as fair game. Check: Simon's unit reports RP. It is information provided to our nobles in a certain way. It doesn't mean any of my characters would ever say "You have 5 honour points less than me, according to my scribe", but they might say "My scribe's research show that my lord is a little less known for your honourable deeds than myself". The best way to change that would be to change the numbers. Honour and prestige could become a subjective scale, for instance. However, in the meantime, our scribes are doing this job for us nobles, and perhaps what we should do is not to trust their info so much. :) - Ta|i 03:57, 16 December 2008 (CET)
