Initial Discovery
During your investigations, you also find yourself unbelievably lucky, or maybe fate has something in store for you. You have found the Dark Handbook of the East Island, a unique and legendary item (Book, +16 prestige).
A heavy tome in faded blue leather, possibly the hide of a young drake, with gilt edging to its impossibly slim vellum pages. A red silk ribbon with delicate threads of gold filigree acts as a bookmark.
The Dark Handbook is an ancient gazetteer describing the lands of East Continent prior to and during the Great Northern War. The accounts contained within are a compilation of many sources, ranging from the secret teachings of the Black Hand and the Fontan Bureau of Irregular Warfare, to the battle manuals of the Great Powers. A number of major battles are described in intimate detail, often with accounts gathered from commanders on both sides of the fighting.
The text within is written in a bold, assertive style, clearly by a single author, and the accounts are heavily annotated. A reader familiar with the languages of East Continent will recognise a definite bias towards Fontanese vocabulary. Several Appendices cover supporting subjects such as military organisation, religious customs, legal systems, trade routes and so forth along with an extended treatise on Mikhail Romanov's Constitution of Fontan.
