Arete Family

Background

Originally established in Riverholm, Abington on Atamara, the Arete family derives its name from the Greek word meaning "virtue," or more specifically, "the excellence that makes anything an outstanding specimen of its kind, especially well fitted to its ends" (Nicomachean Ethics, trans. Joe Sachs, pg. 212).

Coat of Arms

The A stands for "Arete", though some family members prefer to believe it stands for "Abington," the homeland of the Arete family. The color blue stands for the virtue of loyalty, which the Arete family believes is the most important virtue of a noble. The color black stands for tragedy, which reflects the family's history of self-sacrifice. The family motto is Vincula de linguae vel tibi linguae dabit - "Lay restraint on thy tongue or thy tongue will lay it on thee". It is not present on the Arete Coat of Arms.
