Currency and Coinage

The most basic currency among nobles of Atamara is a gold coin roughly the same value in all kingdoms. Bank notes are issued backed in this coin, and most transactions are paid in gold. It is often known as a GILDER in Eston.

Among the peasantry, more coins exist, stamped of lesser metals. Nobility often carry these coins, to pay for low-born services and whatnot.

The silver DUCAT is used most often for paying soldiers. Twelve ducats are in a gilder. The Estonian Ducat is sometimes called the "THREE-SPEAR", as it is stamped with the three spears of the Eston Arms. (For example an unpaid soldier might say of his Lord, "'e owes me a full twenny three-spear, 'an if I don' get it right soon, I'll desert, I will!")

The HAWTHORNE-FARTHING is another silver coin, equaling half a ducat, while the AMDOR-PENCE is eight to a ducat. The lowest coinage is the copper ROYAL ALM, also known as the "ANDY", as it is stamped with the profile of Our Good King. One Gilder is worth 180 andys. The poorest of the peasantry affectionately call out, "Andy's for the loyal?" when nobles ride by.

Traditionally, knights keep a bag of andys on hand for these beggars, as a sign of goodwill.

To recap:
