The landscape is a fairly bleak one, compared to that of the lush vale to the east. Dusty tracks criss-cross Lantzas like those of industrious ants, but rarely seem to lead anywhere, often simply vanishing into the barrens. Those few roads that are properly constructed tend to run in straight lines, in the old-Arcaean fashion, as if seeking to leave the region as quickly as possible. It is around these roads (and the river) that most of the visible life of the region centers; Lantzas is situated between some of the most prosperous cities in the North. Much of the lord's income relies upon taxing passing merchants. For a long time bandits were the more frequent tax collectors; their activities ceased under Baron Euran's rule.

==Description==
==Geography==

Geographically, Lantzas is largely barren wasteland. Many villages can be found clinging to the river that borders the eastern edge of Lantzas, but few inhabitants reside in the northern foothills of the Salatian mountains. A number of small market towns squeeze a living out of passing caravans along the trade routes crossing the wastes to the north- and south-east of Lantzas. The central plains would be unremarkable, but for the evidence of armies having clashed there many times.
Dry grassland and scrub covers most of Lantzas, with some more fertile areas bordering the river. It is a thoroughly traveled region; many inns can be found, even a few of quality to cater for nobles. To the east peasants live off fish and crops, while in the north goat farming is the norm, amongst the horse tribes.

As far back as any can remember, Lantzas has been the subject of intense territorial dispute. The loremasters in its renowned house of healing have a small leather bound book listing the nobles with a claim to the region, which is many times the length of the official tally. It would in fact be hard to find a noble house in the Far East without a claim, however twisted and convoluted it might be.
===Castle Lantze===

The matter of who has the right to the title of Baron of Lantzas has declined in importance, thanks to the sheer impossibility of deciding which noble has the most legitimate claim. The pressing consideration has therefore become who has the might to hold Lantzas. Attempts to settle this question have lead to a spate of battles, each more bloody than the last, occurring on the soil of Lantzas. Tattered remnants of weapons and armour can be found strewn across certain parts of the region.
Situated in the south of the region is Castle Lantze, seat of the local baron and last line of defence against invaders. Its walls are not as strong as they used to be, crumbled to uselessness in several places, but the interior is finely furnished. A militia barracks provides bedding for the garrison, and Lantzas' warehouse is located within the walls as well. Lantze would be something of a regional hub, were it not for its location in essentially the middle of nowhere.

The peasants of Lantzas are a proud and independent lot, used to taking up arms in the defence of their homes from greedy raiders. They care little for the rights of nobles to their land, which has changed hands so many times, but hope that one day stability can be brought to the region. Immigration from a mix of Sasatian mountain folk from the north, rough sailors from the east and traders from the west has made the population of Lantzas highly enterprising - given the chance, they would likely throw off the shackles of oppressive foreign landlords and look after themselves, and have attempted to do so several times in the past.
===Northern Wilds===

Lantzas has its own internal strife to deal with, religiously divided as it is. Remnants of Elihism still cling to the region, even since the religion has all but ceased to exist. Influences from the Church of Sartan have also conflicted with the growing supporters of MAE, an ancient faith of the area.
The foothills to Sasat's mountains break up the landscape in northern Lantzas. A small forest, not managed although occasionally used by the lord for hunting, lies nestled amongst them. The Horse Clans roam throughout most of these lands, and are generally allowed much autonomy, so long as they agree to provide a number of their warriors for service in the Arcaean army. For many years the horsemen practised banditry; although they have now been brought under the authority of the local lord, travellers are advised to be careful.

===Raen Duin River===

* Castle Lantze - more of a fortified manor than a castle, Lantze is the Baron of Lantzas' seat of power.
Most of what passes for civilization in Lantzas lines the Raen Duin, profiting off the trade up and down it and fishing in the river. They tend to be amicable folk, somewhat relaxed (some would say lazy), with a passion for gambling. Many of them are immigrants from Remton or Lasop, tired of the city life but retaining their street wiles. The largest settlement is on the northeastern border with Remton. The Hall of Healing here is one of the finest centers for studying the healing arts in the north, and has an ancient past.

===Wasteland===

The south western part of Lantzas is more sparsely populated. Lonely and unsavoury types, who often become soldiers in times of war, scratch a living out in the barrens. Those from other parts of Lantzas disparagingly refer to them as brigands, and it is true that they have taken up banditry in the past. Many battles have been fought over this apparently worthless land, discouraging other residents, and it is not uncommon to find battlefields of skeletons and rusted weapons strewn around the wastes.

Much of the lord's income relies upon taxing passing merchants. For a long time bandits were the more frequent tax collectors; their activities ceased under Baron Euran's rule.

Geography

Dry grassland and scrub covers most of Lantzas, with some more fertile areas bordering the river. It is a thoroughly traveled region; many inns can be found, even a few of quality to cater for nobles. To the east peasants live off fish and crops, while in the north goat farming is the norm, amongst the horse tribes.

Castle Lantze

Situated in the south of the region is Castle Lantze, seat of the local baron and last line of defence against invaders. Its walls are not as strong as they used to be, crumbled to uselessness in several places, but the interior is finely furnished. A militia barracks provides bedding for the garrison, and Lantzas' warehouse is located within the walls as well. Lantze would be something of a regional hub, were it not for its location in essentially the middle of nowhere.

Northern Wilds

The foothills to Sasat's mountains break up the landscape in northern Lantzas. A small forest, not managed although occasionally used by the lord for hunting, lies nestled amongst them. The Horse Clans roam throughout most of these lands, and are generally allowed much autonomy, so long as they agree to provide a number of their warriors for service in the Arcaean army. For many years the horsemen practised banditry; although they have now been brought under the authority of the local lord, travellers are advised to be careful.

Raen Duin River

Most of what passes for civilization in Lantzas lines the Raen Duin, profiting off the trade up and down it and fishing in the river. They tend to be amicable folk, somewhat relaxed (some would say lazy), with a passion for gambling. Many of them are immigrants from Remton or Lasop, tired of the city life but retaining their street wiles. The largest settlement is on the northeastern border with Remton. The Hall of Healing here is one of the finest centers for studying the healing arts in the north, and has an ancient past.

Wasteland

The south western part of Lantzas is more sparsely populated. Lonely and unsavoury types, who often become soldiers in times of war, scratch a living out in the barrens. Those from other parts of Lantzas disparagingly refer to them as brigands, and it is true that they have taken up banditry in the past. Many battles have been fought over this apparently worthless land, discouraging other residents, and it is not uncommon to find battlefields of skeletons and rusted weapons strewn around the wastes.

History

Lords

Lantzas was ruled by Rhathar Frostnova as part of Ethiala. In the conflict that followed with Arcaea, Rhathar defected after becoming disgruntled with Ethiala's lack of effort to defend the region. He was consequently killed while defending his lands from an overwhelming Ethialan force.

After him came Elmindra Sands, who eventually, disappointed with Ethiala's lack of effort to develop the region, defected to Lasanar. Ethiala swiftly reclaimed the region and put it under the care of Dren Kandurell, who shortly followed his Duke, Dieter de Blanc, to defect from Ethiala and form the realm of Kamador. A brief rebellion then reinstated Elmindra before Dren was once again made Baron. The peasants once more threw Dren out (who was far too honourable for a Lantzian) but accepted the appointment of his cousin, Euran Yetisbane who was raucous and devious in the truest traditions of the region. He promptly defected to Arcaea.
