Appearance

Euran is a massive mean looking viking raider. He's covered in scars, missing half an ear, two fingers off his left hand and a sizeable chunk of his shoulder. More recently, a gaping wound has taken up residence where once there was a nose. His eye colours don't match and he has a pair of lungs to rival a Yeti, which he proudly proclaims that he has killed by wearing a Yeti skin. Some of the more gullible peasants have taken this to mean that he's the son of a Yeti. He could never have been described as handsome in the first place, but his impressive collection of battle wounds have taken him past 'grizzled' and all the way through to 'disfigured'.

Personality

Euran is no a philosopher. What scarce intelligence he has is of a purely practical nature; he is cunning rather than thoughtful. Ultimately Euran is selfish and cynical, with a desire for gold and power and a willingness to tread on anyone who gets in his way. He is subject to powerful passions, however, and these emotions can counteract his wide amoral streak. His loyalty can be earned, but it is a long and difficult thing. He makes for a harsh liege but a generous one, given to fits of anger and indulgence. Gregarious when the mood takes him, Euran is passably good at telling tales and stories. Above all else, Euran is capable of massive rage and has a tremendous love of battle. He is a berserker, tearing down friend and foe alike for the sheer thrill of it.

History

From Moramroth to Lantzas

Euran drank and fought his way through various wars of Norland, as a young man, but never commanded his own troops into battle. He would always return to his home village, deep in the mountains of Moramroth, where a dialect so alien to that which most people spoke had flourished into almost a separate language entirely. Eventually, upon discovering that an ill advised relationship with his neighbour's strong willed daughter had born fruit, as it were, he became decidedly more interested in leaving Norland than staying in it. He trekked across mountains and through passes to the home of a reclusive hermit, a magician, whose words had always been considered important by members of his family's tribe. He was told to go East, far East and seek his fortune away from Atamara.

Glad for the excuse, Euran chartered a ship and set sail for the Far East. He arrived on the Dark Isle, home to Adghar and Arcachon, and found that his talents were well suited to their ways. For some time he raided deep into Sartania with them, becoming a devotee of Adghar and enjoying himself greatly. A call from his cousin Dren, in Kamador, proved enough of a distraction to draw him that way. Euran was not all that impressed upon arrival. The riches that he had been promised from Lantzas turned out to be of a speculative nature, and it was clear that King Dieter of Kamador was a fool. When Dren's ineptitude spurred the peasants on enough to kick him out, Euran was there to pick up the pieces. He promptly took his Barony to Arcaea.

Wild Western Baron

Lantzas and Euran were well suited to each other. Your typical Lantzasian was neither particular scrupulous nor honest, and they did not prefer their lords to be that way. He soon had trade increasing, gambling becoming a local favourite pastime, and managed to convince the local horse tribes (who had been resorting to banditry) to work for him, rather than against him. Euran served Arcaea faithfully and developed a strong loyalty to King Jenred, who is perhaps the only man that Euran would take care not to anger. During the Sartanian War Euran developed a passionate hatred of all things Sartanian. He frequently took up the call to destroy the religion for good, he was somewhat suspicious of Sartanians who joined Arcaea (even after they had proven their loyalty again and again), and he took great pleasure in burning to the ground any Sartanian place of worship that he found.

Almost certainly the greatest shock in Euran's life was when Arnora (the woman he fled Norland from) tracked him down and pressed Kaetil (his son) upon him. Exactly why a mother would abandon her child in such a fashion, Euran never found out. In any case, the Baron would prove to be an extremely poor father, taking every possible opportunity to distance himself from his child. Eventually Euran's far more responsible cousin, Cardinal Dren of Magna Aenilia Ecclesia, took the child to Remton to see the King. After warding for a time at the palace Kaetil was sent to live with Dougal, who had an impeccable child rearing record, having raised Queen Edara herself.
