Chapter One

Event from Red Leaf
Message sent to Everyone in the vicinity of Nark
Birds chirped in the early morning sun, a light breeze blew loose some reddened leaves off the innumerable mass of trees in the thick forest of Nark, where only scattered slivers of sunlight reached the ground beneath the canopy. The juvenile feline Red Leaf wandered into a small clearing, calmly grooming herself while several adults gathered around a fresh kill. She stared inquisitively at the ravenous adults while continuing to smooth the soft fur on her head.

A curious bird fluttered by, landing on the same fallen branch that Red Leaf chose as her resting place. At once, the bird stopped making any noise, unsure and fearful for its life. Red Leaf looked at the bird with interest, but showed no movement to harm the small animal. After a silent moment paralyzed in fear, the bird flew off, Red Leaf watching it take to the skies in amazement.

"Child Red Leaf," a soft low purr came from the young monster's side. Immediately she recognized the voice.

"Elder Clear Stone!" Red Leaf immediately ended her grooming and leaped off her perch, standing on all fours before the old and wizened beast. She moved close to Clear Stone, nuzzling the older feline's head and neck in greeting.

Clear Stone purred gently, licking Red Leaf on her head between the two ears. "Child, what you just did was very compassionate."

"Is...is that a bad thing, Elder Clear Stone?" Red Leaf's tail drooped as did her ears. She looked up at Clear Stone, who was, to her surprise, smiling.

"No, Child. It is a very good thing that you have done. We have not all forgotten, it seems. Learn well, grow well." With a last rub of Red Leaf's head, Clear Stone left with an unsteady gait away from the feeding adults.

Event from Bloodclaw
Message sent to Everyone in the vicinity of Thysan
A loud roar sent tremors through the forest, making the more timid wildlife scurry for safety. The source of the roar, a large, fierce, and scarred golden beast, stood proudly, observing his strongest and most ferocious brothers. The hunt in Thysan had been good, and the stupid and brutish beasts who knew nothing of life beyond their next meal were slain as testament to his superior intellect. Bloodclaw licked some remaining blood, still wet and thick, dripping down his front paw. The blood of slain creatures weaker than he tasted sweet to the harsh alpha monster, and he soon thirsted for more as he called his brothers to move to Nark. Either he would have more capable hunters in his pack, or more sweet blood of weaklings to drink.

As the day passed from morning to afternoon, and bellies were filled, Red Leaf returned to her home to enjoy some rest. As soon as she stepped into the boundaries of her family’s territories, several cubs came out, bounding jubilantly and excitedly to greet their sister.

Laughing with the young ones, Red Leaf rolled onto her back to allow the little cubs to climb over her, their soft paws tickling her. She enjoyed this light-hearted romp for several minutes, stopping only when she heard a familiar voice. The cubs eventually got off their sister’s larger body, and crawled back to their cozy nest. Red Leaf raised herself to meet the amused gaze of her mother Warm Spring.

"Mother, hello." Was all Red Leaf could manage, for she was much too embarrassed to maintain her gaze with her mother.

The busy mother of six cubs said nothing to her older daughter. But there was only warmth and love in her eyes, and when she gracefully stepped to her daughter’s side, she gently licked her head. "Welcome home, Red Leaf. Did you enjoy your morning?" Asked Warm Spring.

"Yes, mother," replied a clearly more comfortable Red Leaf. "I even saw Elder Clear Stone today. She talked to me and even praised me!" Red Leaf purred happily after recounting the event. She sighed contentedly while her mother licked her head, feeling happy that she had such a comfortable life.

Event from Slateshell
Message sent to Everyone in the vicinity of Nark
"We have arrived, Leader." Standing tensely beside Bloodclaw was a sable feline named Slateshell, slightly smaller than the alpha, who served as the pack leader’s second-in-command.

"Good, I can smell their blood even now." Bloodclaw licked his lips with bloodthirsty anticipation.

Something felt wrong, though Red Leaf could not tell what she felt that mad her think so. It was already night, and the leaves of the forest canopy scattered the moonlight across the cool soil. The cubs and Warm Spring were already asleep, as were most of the pride. Only a few watchers were left sleepily patrolling around the perimeter of the nests.

Not wishing to bother her mother or the sleeping cubs, Red Leaf stayed silent, but she could not sleep. Constantly through the early night she turned restlessly. This was noticed by Gold Leaf, her younger sister who was almost a juvenile. Red Leaf awoke to Gold Leaf’s nose touching her face. Hoping that she would at least find some comfort with her sister around, Red Leaf stood up suddenly.

"Come Gold Leaf, we’re sleeping somewhere else tonight." Said Red Leaf. Gold Leaf did not question her sister and obediently followed the older feline to a tree hollow, where the younger beast immediately curled up next to the warm body of her sister and fell asleep. Red Leaf carefully moved a large rock in front of the opening before she too fell asleep beside the calmly sleeping Gold Leaf.

Whatever peace and silence once existed beneath the moonlit night in Nark was soon shattered by the arrival of dozens of fast, ferocious beasts, that tore open flesh with their sharp claws and fangs, devouring chunks of flesh that they stripped from their victims and drinking the blood from their throats. In the short time that passed, most of the beasts living in the eastern part of Nark were dead or dying. The survivors were rounded up and brought before Bloodclaw, who checked each of them thoroughly. The males who appeared strong he would spare, sending away with his fiercest brothers to test their abilities and their loyalty. The weak males he would maul immediately. The cubs that survived were quickly torn to bloody pieces by his brothers, the murderous beasts stopping only at the juveniles. Bloodclaw appraised the females, judging which ones would be suitable mates. But he soon tired of choosing so he ordered all the females to be brought to his lair, such that after he had a turn with all of them he would decide which ones to keep for himself, and which ones to give to his brothers.

When the screams of pain and fear subsided, and the woods were quiet again, Red Leaf raised her head out of her hiding spot. She was immediately assaulted by the strong stench of blood, a smell that was not foreign, but the concentration of which she had never before encountered. But there were no longer any living beasts around, so she was safe for the moment.

"Gold Leaf, come out. It’s safe now." Red Leaf called out to her younger sister, and the cub almost reaching her juvenile years cautiously emerged from the tree hollow.

"Red Leaf, I’m scared." Cried the young feline. Red Leaf laid a comforting paw on her sister’s head.

"So am I, Gold Leaf." With great effort Red Leaf tried to control the trembling in her voice, trying to keep her sister from panicking. Her heartbeat raced wildly as she tried to accept what had happened. She was fast enough to cover Gold Leaf’s eyes from seeing the many dead and messy corpses of their family and friends lying on the crimson-dyed soil, but in doing so she saw the ghastly image herself. Red Leaf felt like crying, felt like screaming to the trees and moon at the injustice, especially after she saw with her own eyes her mother taken away by the large hulking beast called Bloodclaw. She nearly drowned in anguish when she saw the pieces of her younger brothers and sisters scattered around her former home. But she held together, for her sister, for their mother. "Let’s go." With one paw still covering Gold Leaf’s eyes, Red Leaf pulled her sister westward, towards the direction she heard Bloodclaw’s pack moving.

"Where are we going?" Asked Gold Leaf, still crying and shaking, moving only by her sister’s guidance.

Red Leaf said in a resolved voice, "To find mother."

Cool raindrops falling on Red Leaf’s nose awoke her with a start. She could not remember how far or how long she carried Gold Leaf on her back, heading only to the west, where she thought the violent pack was headed. Picking up her head she sniffed the air, smelling rain-soaked bark and leaves. There was no scent remaining after the rain washed it all away. In the lonely forest filled with the mixed beats of rain falling on leaves and soil, Red Leaf shivered in the cooler autumn air. There was no point waking Gold Leaf to move through the rain, so Red Leaf lay beside her sister, sharing their warmth in the cold forest.

She could feel her heartbeat racing, even after a night of deep sleep owing to fatigue. The hulking beast that took her mother looked different, not just in his larger size but also in his face. He had a longer snout, and a rounder face, with two small eyes and two round ears. His mouth was filled with blood, his claws stained in red. And for a chilling moment, Red Leaf thought she saw his eyes meet hers, and she imagined she stared into a pool of pure hatred and violence. She shuddered, trying desperately to erase the image.

The morning sun had yet to rise, so Red Leaf tried to return to sleep. But with the memories haunting her, she never found any rest. The only consolation she had through the restless night was the knowledge that her sister did not witness such horrors.
