The known history of this blade begins with Herzog, a wandering cripple from Zonasa.

He came across a camp of at least two dozen giants nestled deep within the canyons of Zolon. Unable to beat such beasts in a direct fight, he began to turn back... only to see from a distance the backs of two guard giants now blocking the narrow canyon that was his only exit. Climbing out would be impossible - even if he had the strength, the sound of his peg leg scraping against bare rock would echo for miles.

With little other choice, Herzog crouched between some rocks and waited in the hope that the patrol would soon move again. But apparently he had already been spotted. The larger giant, about fifteen feet tall by Herzog's account, came to investigate. When Herzog first heard the approaching footsteps he quickly grabbed a length of blood pudding from his ration bag, smeared himself with the partially congealed innards, and feigned death.

When the giant arrived upon the bloody, limp body he alertly shot his gaze upwards to the cliff walls to look for the unknown assailant. Seizing the moment, Herzog spring upright and swing his walking staff with all his might. The heavy metal knob on the end connected directly with the giant's kneecap. In surprise and in pain, the giant dropped his blade.

It was a two-handed broadsword of human proportions, but the giant had been holding it as a dagger. Herzog wanted desperately to flee, but felt compelled to first grab the blade. It was the largest he ever held, yet it felt weightless in his hands.

As Herzog held the blade, he felt weird and bewitched. It was as if he was merely watching himself fight, and someone else was making his movements. Herzog saw his arms swing the blade and effortlessly decapitate the keeled-over giant. As this happened, he could hear an urgent whisper:

Taron. Doom.

Herzog watched as he began to run as fast as he could, directly charging the second guard. The guard was likewise charging Herzog, pointing forward with a long metal pike extended further by the giant's armspan. Herzog's first sideways swing of the blade came at just the right moment to cleave away the pike's sharp tip and deflect its shaft, and the second swing cut cleanly through the giant's torso. Herzog heard another whisper. The voice was now deep and piercing:

And so the Forgetful Thief struck down the Blind Watchers. And truly did they know the name of the King.

The strange mood subsided, and Herzog felt his arms and leg ache. He knew he had to take the blade with him to the lands of Zonasa.
