Talk:The Herald from the Far Beyond

From BattleMaster Wiki
Jump to navigation Jump to search

Soon enough, the Herald would like to start penetrating into the newspapers of the continents. The Herald's mission is to spread Sautican wisdom to all people of the Battlemaster world, and so he expects each access point to include a relay to his collection. It is in an Editor's best interest to introduce themselves to the Herald and arrange things with him. (OOC: I would like each newspaper to have a link to the Herald's site so more people who read the newspapers can enjoy creative writings as well as local news.)

What is this?

Out of curiosity, what exactly is this supposed to be? Maybe I'm missing something, but I can't find any references to islands, realms, or anything else that would give any frame of reference to this at all. --Indirik 02:59, 14 December 2008 (CET)

Of course not, the world the Herald comes from is parallel to the one our characters live in. He has crossed the boundary to share stories and lessons for our benefit. (IC of course). OOC: this is a venue for me to share my creative writings for the Battlemaster community, without fixing them to in-game realities. I was thinking of writing serials to be published in newspapers, but thought it better to just create my own journal.D.west.ton 16:50, 14 December 2008 (CET)
Oh, and things like the essay on guilds are a way for me to share my ideas about the game. Characters in-game can say they learned from the Herald if they are to use some of my ideas in their realm. 16:52, 14 December 2008 (CET)

Calling all Creative Writers

I originally thought of selfishly hogging the Herald for my own, hoping that none of you germ infested parasites would ruin it or spoil it with your menial filth, but I have had a change of heart :).

So, you are welcome to submit short stories to me, or poems or plays or anything that you think would be a worthy contribution to the Herald from the Far Beyond. There are a few basic rules and standards that you need to follow to make things consistent.

Rules

1. Please follow the genre guidelines. Everything that could be written by the Sauticans falls into those basic categories. If you would like to invent a new genre, we can do that, give it a new colour and everything, but clear it with me first.

2. Because Sautica is a parallel literary Game World, only things that can happen in Battlemaster can happen in the Sautican stories. If you want to use magic and things, it is okay, so long as you explicitly state that this is a story or a myth in the Sautican world. They have mythology and fairy tales just as we do and recognize that magic is make believe.

3. Every writer (who should all be IC) must acknowledge the permission or the blessings of the Most High. I intentionally leave the details of this figure vague in all the works brought from the Herald but behind the curtain (for your eyes only) it is the title of the ruler of the whole land who is treated as a god. Sautica is an island like the ones we know, and the Most High rules the whole thing (in many unexplained ways). Review the stories already posted to see how this character is used. Generally, the Most High is thanked at the beginning and the end.

4. Follow the standards of the Sautican story telling method. You will notice that every story lists a basic Cast of Characters, has 'So it begins...' before it starts, and if you use chapters they must be centred in the same way, and all dialogue is indented using one colon.

5. The word limit is generally four thousand words or less, anything longer should be turned into a series (a two-parter, or a serial).

6. The intention is to make stories that can occur in Battlemaster. I would like players to read these and say, "Hey, one of my characters should do that!" You can still make stories that are pure entertainment, players need those too, but otherwise why else write for the Herald if it has nothing to do with Battlemaster?

7. Do not use your Battlemaster characters or realms in these stories. Invent new ones that would exist in Sautica. Create your dream realm and dream characters and share it in a story, but don't mix the barrier of In-Game Battlemaster and In-Literature Sautica.

8. Please post your stories on the submissions page exactly as they would look delivered by the Herald. Copy and paste the genre colour boxes I use and mimic the synopsis format and the link tagline. I will read them and make sure they obey these rules, then I will bring them over to the Herald's collections.

If I think of any new rules, or any issue arise that need to be included, I will update this list. Ask any questions on the submissions talk page. Share this with your friends! Writing on the wiki is half the fun of playing Battlemaster, don't take it for granted.
