Alexius, your theory actually bears more water than you may think. BUT, small realms do not actually produce madmen. The situation is different. Charismatic people, strong-willed people, create new realms, and new realms are usually small. Large realms, old realms, tend (usually, not always) to drift to pleaser-type rulers. Rulers who can play to the masses. Small realms tend to have rulers who are either founders of the nation (i.e. probably strong-willed, ideologically guided, charismatic peoples). As the realm grows older, it tends to moderate a bit or drift to popular heroes. Take Irombrozia for example. We were founded by King Marc: a strong-willed lunatic. The man couldn't focus on policy for 15 minutes before we had to fondle a chair or something, yet he was charismatic, and he was an inspiration to the realm. After Marc we had Baiko: a popular hero of the secession. Baiko, of course, didn't really want the rulership. Eventually, after Marc's death, it came to me. I tend to think of myself as a reasonable and moderate person, others probably think of me as a vile and scheming villain.

Or we could consider Fwuvoghor. Fwuvoghor was founded by a man who seriously actually believed in the things he wrote in the Articles of Independence or whatever it is that Fwuvoghor is based on. RoF was founded on a narrow and radical ideology, and had a strong-willed ruler who was able to say to the largest power in Beluaterra at the time, "Shove it!" Eventually Dirrik was replaced by one of the earliest members of the realm, and a popular hero: Retravic. Retravic was replaced by a man who HUNTS for chaotic situation, and LIVES off of power: Widfara, the vilest human on the continent. He was deposed by Retravic in RoF's monarchist movement, and Retravic, I believe, was a good ruler... but was also a radical ruler. Since Retravic's day RoF has grown older and larger. After Retravic came Ben's, who was a reasonable and moderate person. A competent duke who just happened to become king. After Ben's came Felmoure, who is a reasonably moderate person.

You see? Small realms are founded around those who believe in an ideology or in their own power so much that they will place it above common sense and reason. These people tend to inspire others to follow them. They create a realm, a wild realm, and their disciples follow. The original ruler eventually goes away and is replaced by either on of their fellow radicals (radicals attract radicals, even opposing radicals. Democrats will attract tyrants) OR by a moderate who comes in at a time when the realm is growing older, and moderation is becoming the norm.

This is a subject I myself have considered many times... and I have often wondered if I am a radical or a moderate. I haven't totally figured out yet, though I have my suspicions. Vellos 22:47, 20 October 2007 (CEST)

Or the larger realms breed people so insane they believe the little guys are the ones loosing it. ;) -Chénier 23:48, 20 October 2007 (CEST)
Wow, you should really dedicate a page to this subject, it's actually quite interesting.
Take Heen for example. We were founded by Scion the Skilled (actually Gauis Marius, but that guy was never considered King ever and left in two days). Scion was a purist who wanted to eridicate evil and vice from his former realm. He took 3/4 of the army by willpower and conviction with him for this purpose and inspired them to win a war of 1 against 2 with only 2 controlled regions to start with against 8 of theirs. Afterwards I was elected, exactly for the reasons you stated. I was the High Marshal of Heen and thus considered going back to the very founders of Heen. Old values you can call it. And I radically introduced something new: a culture for Heen. My entire campaign was ran on one message (OOC: I was on a holiday) about culture and national identity. And I think that most rulers can agree that I am quite radical about some points...
This is actually a very interesting point of study...Foreign Curs 12:28, 21 October 2007 (CEST)

Retravic was replaced by a man who HUNTS for chaotic situation, and LIVES off of power: Widfara, the vilest human on the continent.

I'm flattered, really. But I don't seek chaos, I seek places where competence, that ever rare commodity, is appreciated and often needed (though RoF was never meant to be a permanent lodging). Nice to know that the title of vilest human ones to me though, and not, for example, to the traitors, weaklings and cowards of the continent. Not even the Necromancer! Truly I must have done something terrible... what was it again? --Widfara

Jean-Olivier got a mention. A glorious beacon of hope from the Slayer era! :P -Chénier 23:15, 21 October 2007 (CEST)

I'm not sure Hireshmont. When I was writing the article I thought to myself "Hireshmont, what a great example or Crazy rulers of small realms." When I tries to find a few specific instances of madness I found there was too little to go on. There was the "Educating peasants," thing sure. Besides that though all there was were a few odd actions of your back when you were in Oligarch like calling "Genius" and "Squirrels," synonyms. Other than that though, I'm out of luck. --Alex 18:31, 21 October 2007 (CEST)

I should take offense to this...I was born in a small realm, spent time in small realm Valentia, and held leadership positions in the, ahem, very, small realm Irombrozia. I consider myself quite sane thank you. ~Hyral

Bah, he's just talking of the more opportunistic (such as me) players who preffer the smaller realms because of their greater social mobility and because their voice just has more weigh than in a realm of a hundred nobles. To get any kind of titles in large realms you need 100 days+ in the realm, while you can just arrive and get appointed in the small ones, which cause it to be less coherent and more chaotic. You do what you want when the "subjects" are as numerous as the councilors. -Chénier 00:12, 5 November 2007 (CET)
But don't believe anything they say, Fwuvoghor is *obviously* the most stable and sane realm in the game. -Chénier 00:13, 5 November 2007 (CET)
