(The accounting of the battle for the Fool’s Girdle as penned by a local bard and given by oral account by Escent, of the house of Noble)

How does a man find peace in his soul? All that Escent has known his adult life has been war and struggle, not only to claim a land wild and unexplored, but also the esteem of those deemed to be better then him simply by the blood in their veins. Escent had pushed himself far beyond the settled lands of Madina and for almost two weeks had been traveling northwest following the rumor of wild unexplored lands and riches. And as his reward Escent has stumbled weary and hungry into the city of Twainville. As he walked under the city gates the dawn was still some hours off and it appeared that the city was closed up for the night. Sighing Escent rode past a few small shops that looked abandoned and finally saw a feeble light in the window of a house. No amount of rapping on the door seemed to wake the owner which meant that Escent would have to appeal to the good graces of the local priests to put him up for the night.

A modest building, the church was easy to find in the middle of the city. The spires stretched up taller then the other building and guided the lonely and town square. The doors of the church were open; one slightly askew on the hinges and the smell seeping out of the doorway was unmistakable. Escent pulled his crossbow and spear from the saddle and shooed his horse away down the street. Jogging down the alley Escent was looking up and when he found what he was looking for he smiled. Pulling him self up to the first story roof Escent quickly climbed up among the roof line and made for the tall stain glass windows. Looking down he saw the loft which stood behind the main stage. Carefully Escent wedged his dagger into the lead used to hold the pieces of glass in place and slowly worked out the first piece. The smell that wafted up out of the church made him blanch. A dozen pieces were hastily removed and laid aside.

Taking his spear Escent placed it between the peak of the roof line and one of the spires, and then looped and tied off a length of rope to the shaft. Escent stood up and stretched his back and shook his head and said a quick prayer that the spear would hold him and slide over the edge and through the window.

His hands ached and burned from the effort of controlling his decent but at last he was at the bottom and moved closer to the edge to have a look. It looked as if the monsters had been content so far going after the butchers store house and the monsters were gorging on livestock; for the moment content. By the light of the braziers and lanterns around the hall Escent counted three, one of them twice the size of the others.

A yell tore from his throat as he jumped off the loft, landing directly on top of what looked to be the smallest. In the instant of chaos another fell to Escent’s right, his sword leaving a huge gash across the monsters neck. Hurling like an arrow over a row of chairs a monster roared and aimed a slash at his head. The blow glanced off his shoulder but it was enough to reel Escent backwards, hitting hard against the wall and knocking his breath away. Disorientated Escent’s bolt missed its mark, and instead of hitting the monster in the chest it sank deep into his belly instead.

Desperation stood in the room, waiting for Escent to make another mistake, ready to overwhelm him. Panic was smiling as well but frowned as Escent dipped his shoulder and pushed off the wall driving forward into the monster with strength born out of fear. It was enough and Escent was out of the corner. The alpha monster had rolled to his feet and ran his hand across his stomach. Holding his hand up a dark green tint could be seen in the torch light dripping from his fingers. The monster charged again, but this time his effort was too weak and easily avoided. This battle would not be his and he knew it, and so did Escent. The end came, not loudly or with a crash of blades but with the soft gurgle as the monster fell to his knees in the middle of the aisle.

Escent waited for a long time before stepping closer and removing the helmet from the monster's head. Even in the dim light of the lanterns and braziers the helm gave off a glimmer. The dawn would be here soon and Escent was suddenly overwhelmed with exhaustion. Walking to the corner he sat down to wait. Someone would be along soon and then he could find a bed and some much needed sleep.
