Founding of Papania
The realm of Papania was founded on March 16, 2008 by Milan von Krondor, Duke of Ossaet by way of secession from the Republic of Lasanar. Also seceding from Lasanar at the time were the Duchies of Akanos (founding Ohnar), Sasrhas (founding Ohnar West), and Colasan (joining Ethiala). The original regions were the City of Ossaet, Abilotiel, Isular and Semon, under command of Lords Milan von Krondor, Vidad Filador, Vinatyfir Serpentis and Lady Nightling Balewind, respectively. Shortly after the new realm's birth, Lord Karpur Dur of Anaos also abandoned Lasanar to join Papania. The first Lord Commander appointed was Vidad Filador, and the first Banker was Sorbad D'Saferate. A judge was not elected for 30 days due to a bureaucratic formality.
Early History
Papania's early history made its success all the more profound. Even before Anaos had joined the young realm, the realm of Ethalia threatened to attack if control of Isular was not immediately and unconditionally handed over. After some debate, it was decided to hold firm in position - a strategy that ultimately worked, but not without the threat of attack looming for some weeks to come. Meanwhile, regions in the undermanned realm suffered from lack of sufficient noble support; each day was a battle to maintain control in nearly every region, and yet there was talk about expansion from some of the younger, more ambitious nobles. Foremost among these nobles was the finally elected Judge, Baroness Nightling, who was of the opinion that Papania should take the city of Colasan from Ethalia by force. Supported by Banker Sorbad, but opposed by High Lord Milan, Duke Vidad, Lord Commander Vulpes and others, the angered Judge banned four of the five region lords, and another noble who did not share her views. Her treason could not have come at a worse time, for that day was also election day for Papania. With so few valid votes remaining, the traitor was elected ruler, but immediately fled the continent. Banker Sorbad also fled the continent, and it is suspected that there was a plan to sell the majority of Papania's food to another realm. Papania was left without ruler, banker or judge for a day. When the chaos settled, a number of titles had been redistributed, and the honour of a few nobles was soiled, but in the end, no one was seriously hurt.
Decline and Fall
In late 2009, High Lord Remorse withdrew Papania from its longstanding alliances with its neighbors, and with the war to the south against Soliferum. In late December, there were a pair of skirmishes between forces of Papania, and those of Arcaea and Arcachon. In response, High Lord Remorse declared war upon those nations. Other nations became involved, declaring war on Papania. Some of the nobles within Papania, being caught by surprise by the war declaration, began working to try to bring an end to the war, as armies closed in on its borders. After some days and a flurry of messages, it was apparent that foreign rulers would have no discussion of peace while Lord Remorse remained on the throne. After a great deal of negotiation, Lord Remorse finally stepped down. But it was too late to save Papania. Ohnar West declared war upon Papania, and Albiotel swore allegiance to Ohnar West. The small forces of Papania prepared themselves to do battle against the much larger forces arrayed against them, and held their ground in Ossaet and in Semon. After a series of battles, the military of Papania was effectively destroyed, leaving Ohnar West and Arcachon largely in military control of most provinces of Papania. Ohnar West took Anaos, and laid siege to Ossaet.
In early January, Semon and Isular swore allegiance to Ohnar West, and within a matter of weeks, Ossaet fell, marking the end of the nation of Papania. Isular soon afterwards went to the realm of Arcaea.
