A wrinkled village elder regales you with a tale upon the disappearance of the Mysterious Vest (+9 prestige) within Ciarin Tut.

After last parting ways with you, I entered Ciarin Tut expecting a long and drawn out affair to find this rumored item. It seems that the wrinkled village elder actually knew what he was talking about, the Vest was certainly there.

I had a quick look around on my way into the village and then spoke to the old fella personally to see if he could further elaborate on his story. Sadly, he had been spinning his tale at the local bar for days now in hopes of free drinks from the many patrons. Most of the patrons in the bar were local peasants who had long ago given up on the old mans stories (and thus not buying his drinks), but there were a couple of groups of adventurers more than willing to buy the old man drinks for any hint of where the item could be found.

I had to wonder, if he had knowledge of this item, WHY would he not seek it out himself and claim such a valuable reward for himself? I now have the answer to this.

As the innkeeper started to throw us all out to close up for the night, I offered to help the wrinkled old fella home. He had been drinking all day and was in no shape to make it home on his own. When we arrived at his farm, the old man explained that he now lived alone because his wife and three children had all died of a sickness last winter. He was really enjoying the attention that the story of the Vest was earning him.

The next mourning the old man took me out to a shed out near the back of his property and showed me the truth of his story. He had indeed found the Vest, but it was in terrible shape (3%). He told me that he knew the Vest to be worthless in its current condition and he had no way of arranging for it to be repaired, so he decided that the rumor of the Vest was more likely to earn him more than the Vest itself. And so it had. He had been drinking free at the tavern for the last several days.

I offered the old man one gold piece for the Vest and his eyes almost popped from his head. I also explained that he could continue telling his tale for a few more days before I would tell anyone that I had found the Vest on the other side of the region, which would give some validity to his stories.

A good deal for both of us, if I could get the Vest to a sage in time for repairs.
