The fog blankets the city, obscuring visibility and making it challenging to discern the movements of individuals. Creatures that fear the sun find solace in the protective shroud of the fog, able to roam freely and undetected.

Looking upon the body of Lexis Galandric shakes his head. "Well damnable damnations. Its going every night now. " He straightened up and looked at his fellow gawkers at the fresh corpse. "Clearly if this beast is going to be killing folks every night we need to start getting more aggressive in hunting it down, or it will turn us all into faceless husks." He turned and walkd to a nearby structure, tapping his chin in thought. "I can attest that Hana was not responsible for this, I watched her house last night to see what she would get up to and she never left. Njal can provide an alibi for Samson." He seemed to be lowering fingers on his hands as possible suspects were crossed off. "That leaves on our suspect list, Jumeaux, Richard, and Tybalt. One of these stands out though." He did dramatic turn and leveled an accusatory finger at Tybalt. "Aha! You said you were going to guard Lexis here last night as he slept, and this morning we find Lexis dead and headless!"

Good Galandric,

The news about Lexis is horrifying indeed. When I heard the news I'll admit a shockwave of guilt hit me. However good Lexis did not take me on my offer to stand guard over him for the night. Also, correct me if I am wrong but his body was found outside of the home of good Njal? This sounds to me like good Lexis did not remain within his abode as he claimed he was going to.

As Lexis did not ask me to guard him when I volunteered, I chose to do something else jnstead. I had a particularly good day in the Ruined Market District yesterday and decided to stay home and assemble traps. I am still in the process of putting them together as I write this as they take a full day and night to assemble. You are welcome to come by my abode today and see with your own eyes that I am in fact assembling traps.

My traps will be fully set by tonight however, and I intend to remain within my well fortified abode tonight and sleep. I will likely stay every night within my well fortified and trapped abode while this thing is out killing. I am not well armed nor have any items to protect me from this creature. It could have very well been me killed last night HAD I been out guarding poor Lexis. In fact I'm in a mind that I might have been the target and perhaps the beast killed Lexis in its rage instead. Though again this doesn't explain why Lexis's body was found outside the home of Njal.

I think the best strategy is to remain indoors at night within fortified home and search for clues and hunt the creature during the day when it is weakest.

If any of you have clues being stored in unprotected homes, you're welcome to store them within mine. By the end of the day I'll have full upgrades AND traps, so my home will be about as safe as possible.

Letter from Tybalt Tideweaver

Message sent to: Njal Fylkir, Rojak Sethar, Tybalt Tideweaver, Samson Dixon

Galandric is very quick to throw out blame with no evidence. He did the same to

Moria yesterday and now he lays the blame of Lexis' death at my feet today.

That seems really suspicious to me. He was already being looked into by others. Then when I offer to guard Lexis but then do not and then Lexis to turns up dead. Perhaps he thought I would be a weak and easy target to kill after hearing how easily Rojak beat me in the streets the other day. When I wasn't there he chose to kill Lexis instead. Maybe now hes trying to frame me to cover his own actions in killing Lexis.

This is just speculation and doesn't explain why Lexis' body was found outside of Njals. I can tell you beyond a shadow of a doubt I was not in the streets last night, I am assembling traps, still am. Any of you are welcome to come by and see them. Except Rojak if you plan on giving me another beating. Ass.

I have slept every other night since we've been trapped in this cursed place. Has anyone seen Galandric sleep in the last week?

Just my thoughts.

Galandric pondered for a few moments, stroking his chin. "You have made no secret the fortifications you've been making to your home Tybalt, and I have my doubts a beast such as the one we hunt would put so much effort into protecting themselve and their home so. There is still some suspicion here, but if you were assembling traps last night that gives you a quite solid alibi for the murder." He turned and regarded Njal. "Tybalt makes a good point about the body being found outside your home Njal. For the first murder you have no alibi, however you did claim to have been together with Samson throughout the night putting Kiran to rest. If Samson can confirm as much that will affirmatively cross you off the list of suspects. If not, I must agree with Tybalt that the body's location is very auspicious."

He turned and regarded some of the other townsfolk. "Is anyone else able to attest to the whereabouts of various townsfolk throughout the night last night? The more confirmable alibis we have the more effective we can be in narrowing down suspects."

Moria approaches the group, clearly shaken, "I witnessed it... I witnessed the end of Lexis and it was a horror to behold."

"I camped outside of Njal's house, I was suspicious of Njal because they seemed defensive. So I stalked up to their house by the cover of night to see if my suspicion was correct. And I saw Lexis, who likley had the same idea... and then I saw a beast kill poor Lexis. What I did not see was Njal." And with that Moria turns towards Njal, "where were you last night? can anyone confirm your story?"

Curiosity piqued, you make your way to Tybalt's house. As you approach, it becomes evident that Tybalt has invested considerable effort into fortifying his residence. The once-vulnerable areas have been reinforced, making it apparent that breaking in won't be a simple task. Tybalt himself is engrossed in his work, diligently crafting a trap to safeguard his home. His unwavering determination is palpable, and it's clear that he intends to dedicate both day and night to fortifying his defenses.

With unwavering resolve, you embark on the task of fortifying your humble abode. Utilizing the materials you have diligently gathered over time, you set about reinforcing your door and windows, ensuring they become formidable barriers against any potential intruders. The walls of your dwelling don't escape your attention either, as you fortify them with the leftover materials, leaving no weak points for even the mightiest of beasts to exploit.

🌫

As you approach Lexis' lifeless body, the remnants of his valiant struggle become evident. The shattered remains of his once-impressive armor lay scattered around him, a testament to the fierce battle he fought.

The area surrounding Lexis' body is marked by the presence of black, beastly hairs, forcibly ripped from the pretender during their violent encounter. Some strands bear the stain of sticky blood, a testament to Lexis' successful counterattacks against the formidable adversary. By studying the footprints left behind, a vivid picture of the confrontation between Lexis and the beast begins to emerge.

Initially unaware of Lexis' presence, the beast's footprints indicate its relentless pursuit of Njal. Yet, unbeknownst to the creature, Lexis lay in wait near Njal's house, poised to defend his comrade. In a bold ambush, Lexis launched a surprise attack, drawing first blood from the beast and scattering droplets of its life essence on the ground. However, as the battle wore on, Lexis's stamina waned, and the relentless onslaught of the pretender proved insurmountable, ultimately leading to his demise.

Amidst the wreckage of Lexis' destroyed armor, you make a curious discovery. Some of the shattered pieces, upon contact, flicker and vanish from sight, testament to the invisible properties of his enchanted equipment. This revelation piques your curiosity, raising questions about the beast's ability to perceive its opponents without relying on vision alone. Could it possess a heightened sense of smell or other senses?

Before departing, you gather what remains of Lexis' equipment, recognizing its potential value in your own ongoing battle against the enigmatic pretender. While he may no longer require these possessions in the afterlife, they shall serve as tools to aid you in your quest to vanquish the relentless beast.

🌫
As the thick fog envelops the city, its moisture-laden air and the scent of damp soil overwhelm your senses, impairing your ability to discern specific odors. The dense shroud not only obscures your vision but also disrupts your sense of smell, rendering it ineffective for detecting the presence of other soldiers. With this realization, you reluctantly abandon the idea of relying on your olfactory senses and shift your focus towards fortifying your defenses.

Undeterred by the limitations imposed by the fog, you dedicate the entire day to the arduous task of constructing and setting a trap. Every moment and resource at your disposal is channeled into fortifying your surroundings, ensuring that your refuge becomes an impregnable stronghold. The process is laborious, requiring careful planning and meticulous execution, but the result promises to grant you a newfound sense of security.

You venture into the local graveyard, drawn by the intrigue of the last tomb. Upon arriving at the tomb, you immediately notice signs of tampering, indicating that someone had attempted to open the seal but failed. Taking advantage of their efforts, you swiftly break the seal, granting you entry into the tomb.

Venturing further, you encounter a formidable metal door, flanked by two imposing statues. The statues come to life, their heads turning towards you, and they speak in a language unknown to you. Strangely, you are able to comprehend their words. The statues meticulously inspect and analyze you, refusing your entry to the deeper sanctum, as you lack the key required for access. Their warning against attempting to force your way in resonates with you, considering their ability to move their heads.

Respecting the statues' authority and sensing the potential consequences of defiance, you retreat from the tomb and make your way back to your house. While journeying home, thoughts of the key necessary to unlock the secrets of the tomb occupy your mind. The nature of this key remains shrouded in mystery, leaving you to ponder its whereabouts and significance in unraveling the secrets of the tomb.

🌫
You embark on a visit to the ruined palace, which appears even more haunting in the shroud of fog. Navigating deeper into the palace, where untouched rooms can still be found, you are suddenly captivated by a peculiar humming sound emanating from nearby. Intrigued, you follow the melodic hum and find yourself in an opulent chamber, reminiscent of a royal woman's quarters. As you enter, the fog within the room begins to dissipate, revealing a figure cloaked in a dark garment fashioned from the fur of the pretender—a sight that raises your guard.

With caution, your hand instinctively hovers near your hilt, ready to draw your sword if needed. The figure slowly turns, revealing the visage of a stunning woman. Her vibrant purple eyes meet yours, and subtly, your hand eases away from the hilt. She introduces herself as a traveling witch who aids abandoned individuals and occasionally visits the city to procure intriguing items for her experiments. Normally, she trades with the locals to gather the materials and artifacts she requires. However, upon hearing of the presence of soldiers such as yourself, she expresses an interest in trading with you.

In a mesmerizing and clear voice, the witch explains that she possesses a large metal key, which she hands over to you. She requests that you retrieve specific items from the largest tomb in the graveyard—a tomb that is not truly a resting place but an ancient spellmaster's laboratory from eons past. As an avid student of magic, she seeks objects that can further her studies. In exchange for your assistance, she offers a discounted price for deciphering the clues you possess. Aware of your mission to eliminate the pretender, she discloses that she has aided others in their hunts before and is willing to assist you as well.

Before your eyes, she gradually retreats into the fog, taking your clues with her. Realizing that your only chance to retrieve them lies within the ancient laboratory, you resolve to explore its depths. Failure to do so would mean losing vital information forever. Determined, you accept the witch's proposition and mark the meeting spot for three days hence. With her disappearance, you are left with a newfound purpose and a mysterious laboratory to uncover.

Galandric seemed perplexed. "Wait... Wait there's something not right here..." He churned the information for a moment then snapped his fingers. "A Lie! There is a Lie at work here!" He turned and leveled an accusatory finger at Njal. "YOU! You have told us two stories that contradict!" He did a little excited jitter as he spoke. "Last night at the start of the night you told us you could confirm an alibi for Samson, as both of you were inspecting Kiran's body. Now however when a witness steps forward that contradicts your original story you say you stayed in and slept all night!"

He seemed giddy as he assembled the pieces together. "You also had no alibi for the night of the first murder. You never even told us what you were doing that night. Now you claim to have some secret group of trustees and evidence narrowing down the search, but you refuse to share it and only offer us your word this dead person was among your confidants." He gestured to Lexis's corpse. "That seems mighty like a last ditch attempt to convince us that you need to be left alive because of some fabled unshared evidence you are holding back from the rest of us."

You carefully inspect the surroundings of your house and discover that one of your traps has been triggered. It is coated in black hair, stained with viscous blood. The evidence suggests that the trap successfully caught the pretender during the night. However, you're taken aback by the realization that even after falling into your deadly trap, the pretender was still able to overpower and defeat Lexis.

I explored the graveyard and found an area needing a key. Fantastic job Njal.

My suggestion is for all of us to go to the graveyard together. And in the night to guard

Galandric scoffed as accusation and claims of evidence flew left and right. "My goodness, Njal you hop around from claim to claim like a frog in a hot pan!" He said, shaking his head. "First you claim, suddenly and out of the blue, that a beast has set off traps at your home, and that it must be the Pretender which would prove your innocence." He raised a hand and held up one finger. "First of all that proves nothing for if your were in fact the pretender you could easily have done that yourself." He raised a second finger. "Secondly I have doubts your home is trapped as you claim. If it were it likely would have been sprung when Moria went to watch your home, as my traps did when she tried to watch mine a few nights back. Even if she had not triggered them and they do in fact exist the fact the pretender didn't set them off last night when it murdered Lexis in front of your door would lead further proof to you being the pretender." He raised a third finger. "And thirdly, if the pretender were someone else why would they try to attack you during the day while you are under intense scrutiny and the most likely suspect? That makes no sense at all."

He shook his head and crossed his arms. "All of this is just not adding up right. It seems odd to me that you claimed alibi at night for the day when no one was killed during the day. I assumed you were claiming an alibi for the night because you made the statement at night, and it would make no sense to need an alibi for the day if no one had died. Mix that with this whole trap thing, and the fact that you suspect me and Moria despite our alibis and active attempts to track the beast down... I am afraid you are simple the most suspicious individual here."

Moria claims to have seen the monster attack Lexis, but no one else did. Is it

possible Moria is the pretender and she came to kill Njal but ran into poor Lexis? She would have had to have killed him so he could not identify her. That or Galandric is the pretender accompanied by Moria to keep a look out.

Something isn't adding up. Maybe Moria saw Galandric is the monster when she was watching him a few nights ago and is now assisting him. Or she went to attack him and his traps stopped her and now he's working for her?

Either way, I'm really thinking either Moria or Galandric are the pretender and the other is assisting the monster. But why? Surely the non pretender will have to die too?

And now Jaumaux is vouching for them as they spin their accusations at Njal.

It's got to be one of them. It's the only thing that makes sense right now.

Good Moria,

You claim to have seen the beast attack poor Lexis outside of Njals home. You vouch for Good Galandric and Good Jumeaux vouches for you both.

I trust good Jaumeax as he and I have visited the Ruined Market Place almost daily together and he has not given me any reason to be suspicious of him.

I wish to understand what happened between you Moria and Galandric as there are many soldiers who question its authenticity. Also any additional details of the attack you witnessed outside of Njals would be welcome. I would also welcome any information on your suspicions of Njal and why you were stalking him last night. It appears you are either on the right trail or were very (un)lucky to encounter the creature.

Fellows,

I have sent a letter to the cabal that as of now I think one of which is the pretender. I wish to see how they will answer any of my questions that we might catch one of them in a lie.

I do believe Jaumaux is innocent in this as I have seen him almost every day at the Market Ruins, but I have not personally ever seen him sleep. So maybe there's an off chance he is the pretender. He has been very quiet in all this. But again, I think this is a bit of a stretch as I haven't SEEN any sus behavior.

Here is a copy of the letter I sent. I will report any answers should they come:

Unfazed by Galandric’s accusations Njal’s eyes narrowed suspiciously at Galandric.

”To your points:
One, the trap shows clearly that the pretender has invaded my home as evidenced by the same hairs that Richard confirmed upon his inspection of the last murder. This coincides with my own investigations.

Two, If Moira was outside watching my house as you say, that makes me doubly suspicious of her complicity with the pretender, as one would need to be IN-side my house to set off my traps. Did she stand guard to watch as the pretender entered my home? Or was it her all along?

Three, If it is believed by most of the investigators that the pretender is strongest at night. Wouldn’t people start to assume that the daylight hours would be the safest time to sleep? The pretender probably assumed I would follow this logic, but did not expect to find my little surprise did he…

How is your Leg Galandric?

Is that a little limp I detect?”

Turning away from Njal, Moria addresses the group.

"Soldiers, Njal is clearly guilty. He has been trying to claim alibi's by conflating timings and making up stories:

"The attack occurred at night. Njal proposes that because we know where they were during the day, that they have an alibi. Your nightly activity is the concern here, not your daytime ones.

"Next, they claim to have had traps that were sprung and that caught the pretender as evidence of their innocence. Nobody can confirm this.

"Finally, they accuse two people that have a known alibi for the first murder, collaborated by a third person.

"The choice here is a pretty simple one: Vote Njal because they've been fabricating alibi's, lying, and throwing around completely unfounded accusations OR distrust the 2 people you know aren't pretenders and see what happens tomorrow night."

“Ahh the accomplice speaks… or is it the pretender herself?

Ha ha!

I hit Moira with a not so subtle slap about mirrors.
I wonder if she will catch on that we know about the hall of mirrors at the palace and that she never shared that info.

My strong suspicion is Galandric is the pretender because he never showed up in the mirror and Moira is his spy, or vice versa.

I’m also not sure if the pretenders speed allows for multiple actions.

Soldier tybalt,

Indeed! Sorry I didn’t see your letter sooner. It is quite simple, while exploring the palace I found a room with mirrors that showed what many of the soldiers were up to. One of the people I saw was Galandric, he was sleeping which I thought was a bit suspicious. So I stalked him that night and set off a trap. I decided to try again the next night and he saw me and shouted out. I believe

this was overheard by Jumeaux. This was the same night that the first murder took place.

Since a murder took place that night and there’s multiple testimonies stating where Galandric and myself were, I believe that proves we’re not the pretender.

It is interesting to hear that the palace holds a means to watch others. What you

say checks out Moria, I did in fact sleep during the day a few days back. I found it the safest time to sleep after learning the beast was most active at night, and plus I have often been

watching others at night for signs of Pretender like activity.

To be sure of Tybalts account I visited his house today and as he said he was indeed in the process of assembling traps, and there was evidence he had been throughout the night. This gives him a solid alibi for the second murder.

As you make your way through the fog towards Richard's house, the reduced visibility adds an extra layer of challenge to your task. The mist obscures your vision, making it hard to keep track of your surroundings. Every step you take is cautious, ensuring you don't draw any unwanted attention.

Arriving near Richard's house, you carefully observe the area, trying to catch any signs of his presence. The fog muffles sounds, making it even more difficult to determine if anyone is inside. You position yourself in a hidden spot, ready to patiently wait for any movement or activity.

As you settle down for the night, the fog blankets your house, shrouding it in a veil of obscurity. The reduced visibility creates an additional layer of protection, making it harder for others to detect your presence. However, you're aware that this same fog also grants cover to potential intruders who may seek to breach your defenses.

As you drift into slumber, the distant sound of hammer hitting nails echoes through the foggy air. It serves as a reminder that others in the city are still working diligently to fortify their own houses, taking precautions to secure their dwellings against possible threats.

🌑🌫 With a heavy heart, you approach Njal's lifeless body, his vacant eyes gazing into the distance. As you search through his pockets, a pang of disappointment fills you as you find no valuable items or clues that could aid you in your quest to hunt down the pretender. You can't help but wonder if Njal had kept his possessions hidden away in the safety of his house.

As you prepare to leave Njal's body behind, a nagging curiosity prompts you to check his shoes. Perhaps, against all odds, there might be something of significance hidden within. Carefully removing his shoes, you instinctively run your hands along the fabric, hoping to stumble upon a hidden compartment or secret stash. And then, your fingers brush against something cold and metallic—a large, mysterious key.

In that instant, a surge of recognition courses through you, as if the key itself emanates a powerful aura. You know deep within your being that this is the very key you have been searching for—the key to unlocking the secrets that lie within the tomb, the key that may hold the key to defeating the pretender.

A mix of relief and anticipation washes over you as you hold the key in your hands, its weight a tangible reminder of the importance of your mission. With renewed determination, you tuck the key safely away, knowing that it will play a crucial role in the battles yet to come.

Although the fog continues to blanket the city, obscuring your path and casting an air of mystery over your every step, you now possess a vital tool that could lead you closer to the truth. With the key in your possession, you stand ready to unlock the doors to the unknown, ready to face the challenges that lie ahead, and ready to confront the pretender who threatens the very fabric of this enigmatic world.
