History

Some of the very first civilizations in Dwilight appeared along the rivers that poured down from what is now known as Mount Black Nastrond. The river was strong, swift and clean. It fertilized the shores and provided a highway for goods to travel on. Sages and mystics flocked to this area, drawn to the power of Mount Black Nastrond itself. There seemed to be some special energy that permeated from the rock.

The mountain seemed to give the men the ability to control minds. If one was aware of this power, they could use it to control those who were unaware. These wise men established a school on the mountain to study this energy. They managed to enslave the local monsters and forced them to carve and smash the rock to build the school from the mountain itself.

For many years the men studied this energy, experimenting and testing it in many ways. They could control any creature on the mountain to do their bidding, if they were unaware of the power. It could even be used to manipulate the minds of travelers and adventurers who passed through the mountain. They used it to make them forget the school, but to return with supplies for those studying there. Soon no one but the wise men themselves knew of the school's location and the power hidden within the rock of the mountain.

As usual, man's appetite for power only grows over time. Soon, the men were no longer satisfied with the complete dominion over the mountain. However, their power would not work without the rock itself. They set about to transfer the rock's energy to another medium, large tomes. Figuring that many peasants and even nobles would not know how read the tomes, let alone care for their contents, they seemed the perfect medium for transportation of this power.

As the men pulled the power from the mountain and focused it into the books, the power of the mountain itself began to fail. The men, working hard on the tomes did not notice until it was too late. Their power over the local monsters failed, and the school was assaulted. In the ensuing turmoil, all of the tomes in storage were destroyed. The final tome escaped the crumbling school in the hands of the warband's leader, as a trophy of his triumph.

The rivers below ran crimson with the blood of the fallen men and bludgeoned monsters - crushed by the falling school. The dust cloud rose high into the sky and could be seen for miles. The tome was passed down as an heirloom, from leader to leader, useless to a monster who could not read and understand its contents. Eventually, it came to the shores of what is now known as Nifel.

Recovery

Rohk Darksun had been fighting monsters in Nifel for weeks. He had seen his fair share of victories and wounds. Rohk seemed to notice that every time he saw the leader of the monsters in Nifel it carried an old book.

Finally, after defeating a small horde of monsters, Rohk is able to fight the leader. Rohk and the monster exchange blows and the forest, otherwise silent, echoes with the grunts and cries of single combat. Rohk works the monster to a ledge and manages to push it over. The 25 foot drop is shrugged off by the monster, but it does not expect its foe to follow so readily. Rohk jumped from the ledge, landing with both feet on the monster's shoulders and hearing a great snapping sound. Unable to move its arms, the monster writhed in pain as Rohk drove his sword through the jaw and into its brain.

Rohk recovered the tome, but could not understand the tongue in which it was written. The only word that he could make out on the worn cover was 'Forbidden', so he continued his journey to find a sage to help him find out more about this tome.
