Aeron looked to the tall dead tree as a feeling of disgust washed over him. Eleven men and women hung limply in the breeze. Their silhouettes were black shadows against the bleak grey and green sky.

No sun warmed his skin and grace him with its light. Only a cold wind that blew gently down from the north. It would rain soon.

“MURDERERS!” A young woman cries from her door, one of the Dawn Guard turned towards her and Aeron raised his hand in a swift motion and the soldier paused before turning back to the tree.

Tears flowed down his otherwise emotionless face. He signaled to his men and motioned for them to march back to Itau.

As they moved out the people hissed and hurled curses at them as they passed, none of them looked up. They were all ashamed of their actions over the past twelve hours.

Once they were a fair distance from the village. Captain Dirksen spoke up. “That was wrong sir, everyone agrees.”

Aeron sighed and nodded. “It was but we had orders, we had to put the insurgents to the sword, lest they grow strong and cause more death.”

Lieutenant Petir scoffed as he glanced to Aeron. “My Prince, we are not executioners that is the duty of those Blackstone Dogs and other lesser men.”

Aeron didn’t speak for a moment before in a sad voice speaking. “How many Legionaries were executed after the Siege of Blackstone.”

No one answered until the old Sergeant Hindrik spoke up in his gravely and gruff voice. “Four hundred and twenty three.”

The Dawn Guard didn’t speak for a time before Aeron voices his thoughts. “We aren’t so different to the Legion and thinking that we are is what started the war in the first place.”

There was no reply to this.
