Nina held the letter tightly in her hands. Her mouth was closed in a pressed line, her eyes were barely open, directed at the words on parchment, but empty, twitching. Inside her, they fought.

"You have no idea what you're talking about!"

"Of course I do, sweetie, you read his words on the last letter and this one..."

"But, Tai, what he wrote on the back..."

"False words, girlie, or perhaps written a long time ago... Of course he'd reuse a parchment to send a note to a commoner!"

"What's wrong with being a commoner?! We sat on the same table while I was a commoner... A Queen and a Duke thanked for my commoner services!"

"He meant it as an insult, baby, just as all that he said on the north, he only meant those as a subterfuge for... something every man wants from you."

"No, Tai, you're wrong. He is troubled. He might have given me knowledge of my noble blood, but he did so with good intent, he might have gone to Lucy, but he found me later and talked to me, he hugged me, he didn't flinch to our blade, and now, he gave me those words. He's not the monster you make him to be."

"Oh, my sweet child, you really don't see what it is that noblemen really want from you, do you? Believe me, child, he is."

"What... What is it that you're so afraid of?! What is it that you try so hard to protect us from?"

"My love..."

"Don't call me that! Not now! You keep accusing him... What if he has one of you inside of him making him say those things?!"

"Baby..." her voice, identical to Nina's except for the hardness of it, came menacing.

The huntress opened her eyes and closed her fists. The savage scream that left her throat woke a few monsters on the fields, which started to groan in response. Then, her trembling hand picked feather and parchment to write a short response. She let a short breath before she wrote, unsteadily.

"Garret, milord,

Don't worry about your ring, I will keep it safe, with me, until we can meet again.

Your words gave me extra strength. Thank you. Hopefully mine can do the same for you.

Nina Tai (Noble)"

With that, the woman sealed the letter and sent it. Smiling, she stretched her arms, and started to braid her hair. It was good to have the mind all to herself for a while.
