Astonishing Sword of Doom

It had been a long night for Edvin. He'd already dispatched numerous undead and was looking forward to some rest. The path was one he had taken on many an occasion and was considered safe from roving monsters and undead, but not this time.

His experience and instincts are what saved him, for as soon as first undead being was upon him his sword was already hacking it apart. One after the other the undead continued to attack and the pile of bones continued to grow until there was but one undead being remaining.

The last was different to the others, more cunning and more agile, a champion. The fight seemed to go on forever and Edvin was tiring, but then an opening appeared in the champion's defences and Edvin seized it. His blade shattered the being's right arm, followed by another shattering blow to it's right leg. And as it fell Edvin landed another blow, this time hacking it's skull from it's body.

Edvin took his time searching the remains for anything he could use or sell. Kicking over the remains of the champion revealed at first nothing, but then a reflection caught his eye. It was a sword, but not the one that the champion had been wielding. Looking at the sword gave Edvin a feeling of unease, but he felt compelled to pick it up. The unease he had felt before was gone, replaced by a sense of power, of confidence. The blade itself was exquisitely made and seemed to shimmer in the moonlight. The guard and pommel were adorned with smooth black gems, which Edvin could not identify.

Edvin was unsure of how long he had been standing there gazing at the blade, but the faint glow of sunrise on the horizon told him it was at least several hours. He wrapped the sword in some cloth and tied it to his pack and then went in search of a bed.
