The Viking clan of O'Neil hails from the rugged wild-land outside of the great city of Makar that lies on the very edge of the frozen borders of the Barony of Makar. For many generations the Clan kept to itself in the vast wilderness and forests, preferring to hunt and gather wealth while letting the outside world pass it by. It was said that the only time an O'Neil ventured from the forests into civilization was to take a wife. It had also been said, though never verified since the odes of the Clan are never heard by an outsider's ear, that the Clan was once one of the greatest warrior clans in the land. Whispered tales say that they were either beaten into submission and hiding or decided to quietly withdraw into the forests in order to preserve what they had for future generations.

The Viking clan of Neill (older texts dub them the “O’Neils”, but recent discoveries have found this to be either outdated or entirely false) originally hailed from the rugged wild-land outside of the great city of Makar that was founded on the very edge of the frozen borders of the Barony of Makar. Ancient Clan tales claim that before the period of seclusion that is found in historical record that the Clan enjoyed unmatched power and wealth, though no evidence has even been found to prove the truth of these claims. Early history has shown that the Clan was originally quite small and secluded from the surrounding communities aside from brief interactions for trade or cultural exchanges. As they began to grow they gained a reputation for being skilled hunters and metal workers; skills that eventually allowed them to achieve the wealth needed to become a true power in the region.

The Clan is proud of its hunting and fishing traditions and every son of the Clan is taught to use a bow at an early age, soon followed by such skills as tracking, small axe wielding, and boating (Though boating is only reserved for the bravest and toughest of the O'Neils. They are respectful, but, fearful of the sea). Though the O’Neils rarely directly practice any sort of war craft they still train in basic combat in order to defend themselves from raiders that come from the sea. They also maintain small forges that produce a variety of high quality weapons.

The first notable individual to make a mark on history beyond the region of Makar was Ender Neill, son of Erik Neill, who would earn an infamous reputation as a brutal and merciless executioner for the Dread Lord of the Barony of Makar. Through Ender the Clan was able to amass enough wealth and influence to become the leading Clan in the Makar region and among the most powerful in the Barony of Makar. Using their newfound wealth the Clan established its own village on the outskirts of the Makarian forests while also maintaining property in the city proper that was owned and operated by Ender himself.

The first of the O’Neils to break from the family to pursue the life of an outsider was Ender, son of Erik, and his departure shocked the Clan at first. They believed he would abandon the ways of the family and never return to the ancestral home. Ender proved them wrong however by visiting constantly and sharing his wealth with them. While the Clan still maintains a small village in a patch of forest well outside the city of Makar, Clan members often visit the O’Neil Estate in Makar where Ender spends most of his time. As time passes the O'Neil Clan has become more entwined into the affairs of the Barony and, while preferring their privacy more often than not, it has moved to the forefront.

A second branch of Clan Neill was formed after the exile of Cid Neill, son of Kvasir Neill. Though there was initially some debate amongst historians on how to label this part of the Clan, it is likely most appropriate to call it “House Neill” since that is how it is referred to in most texts and records from the time when those members of the Neill family were active in the Far East. Cid Neill, the founder of House Neill went to great lengths to remove all ties to the Makarian Clan and, as such, much of the House’s history is difficult to tie back to the Clan.

''Note on the Organization of the Clan:'' Since Clan O'Neil is the dominant Clan in the forests of Makar many other, smaller families and clans enjoy a partnership with the O'Neils in the interest of shared wealth or survival. These partnerships allow the strengthening and expansion of the Clan without forcing the other families into extinction. Typically these partnerships are usually formed through marriages and many of the Clan have dual surnames to reflect allegiance to Clan O'Neil and to their own families. Because of this only one true blood line of O'Neils has claim to the true name and any hereditary titles or benefits that go along with this. These privileges only extend beyond this pure bloodline to Vikings who can trace their direct bloodline, within a few generations, to the O'Neils themselves. These family laws are in place to ensure the O'Neil name is never fully lost in the mix and that only a true O'Neil can lay claim to the leadership of the Clan.

''Note on the Far East Branch of the Clan:''With the exile of Cid O'Neil and his subsequent fathering of a son a new line of O'Neils was created. For a great deal of time this blood line was hidden, but resurfaced when Edmund's birth right and heritage was revealed to him in the last years of Cid O'Neil's life. While the name is carried on, all ties to the Makarian Clan of O'Neil have been severed. Edmund himself knows next to nothing of Cid's true origins (much of it was concealed or fabricated by Cid to protect Edmund from those he believed to be "savages and barbarians") and the Vikings in Makar next to nothing of Edmund's existence. This is probably for the best. If any descendant of Cid were to ever resurface in Makar claiming family rights they would likely be brutally beaten or killed after being branded imposters, witches, monsters, or whatever excuse could be thought up at the time to justify a good old fashioned brawl.

=== The O'Neil Clan's Chosen Symbols ===

The most common symbol used by the core members of the Clan is a brown bear in various poses. The reason for the use of the bear probably lies in the fact that the O’Neil Clan used bear pelts for a variety of purposes in everyday life. To name a few examples, they served as cloaks, blankets, and decorative coverings. Some who saw the symbol in use and were of a more learned mind also saw connections with the use of the bear to represent strength, cunning, and extreme loyalty to one’s kin in some similar cultures. Often times the bear was depicted as being brown and surrounded by some scheme using green or blue colors.

The Viking Clan of Neill and House Neill

The Viking clan of Neill (older texts dub them the “O’Neils”, but recent discoveries have found this to be either outdated or entirely false) originally hailed from the rugged wild-land outside of the great city of Makar that was founded on the very edge of the frozen borders of the Barony of Makar.
