Redemption Songs

Erik Eyolf marched through Sirion lands. Alone. By the first time in his life he marched alone. None of the Stormwalkers with him. Without his brother. Without Captain Karl. By the first time. Alone, just alone. The pain was heavy in his heart. The Goddess was not smiling to him. She did not come in his dreams soothe the sorrow. Just a Judge walking alone with almost no gold in his pockets, less than a Knight had after paying the soldiers. Just a lot of investment letters and requests to the family wealth. And words of mercy. Justice and mercy. A pilgrim.

And alone he came to Elmbar after not visiting the region for a long time. He followed a path of redemption to the heart of Sirion and beyond, to the shores of Blaastambar. He would visit the house of his heritage in Slimbar. But the people stopped him to continue his pilgrimage. The villagers wanted to hear his words. War tales. Words of encouragement. A court has been provided. Not a common court. Just children, old and weary men, farmers, housewives and ordinary workers.

Erik was no longer a young elf. He was no longer the young Judge. Sirion knew his ferocity in battle. His victories. His commitment to keep the war to restore the former glory of a legendary realm. But now he needed the people. It was not just the people who needed him. And he listened.

The first to walk toward him and before the people was an old sailor and farm worker. Old and tired. But confident. He told his story.

Old pirates, yes, they rob I;

Sold I to the merchant ships,

Minutes after they took I

From the bottomless pit.

But my hand was made strong

By the hand of the almighty.

We forward in this generation

Triumphantly.

Wont you help to sing

These songs of freedom?

cause all I ever have:

Redemption songs;

Redemption songs.

Emancipate yourselves from mental slavery;

None but ourselves can free our minds.

Have no fear,

Cause none of them can stop the time.

How long shall they kill our prophets,

While we stand aside and look?

Some say its just a part of it:

We've got to fulfill the book.

Wont you help to sing

These songs of freedom?

cause all I ever have:

Redemption songs;

Songs of freedom.

Erik could cry. But there were no tears. Just a strange sense of accomplishment. Before he could embrace all women there. But the children came near his legs where he sat to rest and hear. Thirsting for hope. Disheveled. Dirty. Hopeful. So it was easy to cheat the weight of the war with good words. And Erik told to the children with sweet a voice:

Don't worry about a thing,

'Cause every little thing gonna be all right.

Rise up this mornin',

Smiled with the risin' sun,

Three little birds

Pitch by my doorstep

Singin' sweet songs

Of melodies pure and true,

Sayin', "This is my message to you:"

Singin': "Don't worry 'bout a thing,

'Cause every little thing gonna be all right."

His hands that held the sword and touched the Goddess stroked the hair of the little ones. And he stay in Elmbar more time before continue his journey.
