                                                History
Firstborn into a noble family, it was still hard growing up. My mother being a scribe with the nobles of Port
Nebel and my father a locksmith by trade, money was never a problem, but it was rare that I would get to spend
any quality time with them. So it was that at age fourteen all I had were my friends to keep me company and my
little sister to look after. Most of the time my father was off in nearby fiefdoms or far away cities working
his trade and my mom was often kept at Port Nebel tower writing for all the wealthy nobles. I don't remember
ever wanting to be a thief, but the rush I got when I took a pouch from some inattentive merchant or when I
would steal some fruit from an unsuspecting vender was too hard to resist. 'You are a natural' my friends would
say after every success...and every attempt was a success. That is until the strangers came into our small town.
They caught my eye immediately. Always I had an eye for the out of ordinary and even though these traveling
merchants (so they claimed) looked the part, I knew better. The first, a huge human man, couldn't hide his
double bladed axe under his robes from me. I notice everything. The second, an extremely beautiful half-elven
woman, couldn't hide her boot dagger and short bow behind her smiles, not from me anyways. I see everything, and
it becomes more obvious the harder you try to hide it. So why did I go poking around eminent danger you
ask? The rush. This was a real challenge and therefore I had to go where none of my friends would dare go.
They stayed at the only inn my small town had to offer, The Shady Comfort Inn, a place I knew very well. I
learned a lot from my dad the times he let me go with him to locksmith in far away places, but when my sister was
born that all ended, but I remember, I learned how to go beyond just making a lock, I learned how to pick it as
well. So it was that on that night I crept up to the window where I knew the half-elf was staying and made my
way unnoticed into her room. I had to look around, find what I could, anything and everything no matter how
personal or insignificant it was. 'A small chest' I thought spying it wrapped in small woolen blankets, and
beside it lock picks! Was she a locksmith like my father I wondered? Open it! Locked...well I can open it with
these, my thoughts were rapid now with the intensity of the moment. Trip a tumbler here, a tumbler there and --
wait, a spring? What is a spring doing in a lock? Oh, a needle here too, well I'll just trip the spring and use
these tweasers to take the needle out and done! That's when I noticed the candle flicker underneath the side
door. Not an adjoining room, this was the bath room...and even though I assumed she was at the tavern with her
bulky human friend she had stayed behind here, to clean up. Oh what a rush it was when I heard the water moving
around...frozen in place not knowing what to do. For the first time ever curiosity overrode my common sense. I
hid and waited. Waited for her to come out, and come out she did. My god what exquisite beauty, like none I had
ever seen before, not even in my dreams. I knew I was lost then, lusting for her, not caring that my breathing
was so deep that she could have heard me easily if she had been listening. The rush was astounding, heart
pounding, eyes watering...Then she stopped. I followed her eyes to the window I had climbed in and noticed at
the same time she did I suppose, the feather lying on the ground that she had obviously put there just in case a
thief should decide to come in through the window...yours truly. It took her all of three seconds to find me,
her acute senses feeling the dark shadows of the room and then fixed on me through the bed. Damn! The heat from
my body I thought...shes a half-elf and with how my heart was racing I must have been glowing brighter than the
noon day sun at this point. I tried to get away, run, I didn't care anymore about being caught but staying
caught was something I wanted to avoid. She was faster than me though and when she had the dagger to my chest
all I could do was stare at her perfect naked body in awe and stutter an apology for what I had done.
"Just a damn kid" she said to me "Foolish boy! I could have killed you, how could you be so stupid as to break into
here?" "I was curious, that's all, I didn't know anyone was in here, I swear!" "You are lucky Brax isn't here, he'd break your legs, only sparing your life cause of your age." At this point she
put her dagger away and started getting hastily dressed. All I could do was stare as she covered the places I
would never forget. "I noticed your lock picks milady, are you a locksmith? Cause if you are I know where you can get wor-" "Shut up boy! Those tools aren't tradesman tools, they are personal" It then hit me...so clear it was that I
gasped. She was a rogue, an adventurer, not a town prowler like me, but a true wandering adventurer. That meant
that her friend, Brax, was probably a mercenary, and it was for certain that if he'd found me instead of her I
would be a cripple for the rest of my life. She starts looking through her things keeping a wary eye on me at
the same time. "I didn't take anything, I swear it, I was honest when I told you I was just curious. We never get adventurers
passing through Nebel, they always use the main roads..." "My tools! My chest! You did this??" she asked eying the needle sitting besides the chest with the tweasers still
out on the bed. "Yeah but I didn't open it! When I was about to that's when I heard the water splashing and..." I was blushing
profusely at this point and she finished for me. "...that's when you decided to hide and steal a close up view of me just outta the bath eh?" "Yes. I couldn't resist. I am sorry, but you are so beautiful I'd be crazy to pass up the opportunity..." "Yeah well, flattery won't get you outta this one kid, but..." She opens the small chest and there I saw more
jewels and coins than I thought could possibly fit into a chest that size. "I never dreamed that merchant caravan would've been carrying a load like this." At that she looked at me, then
looked back at the chest as if pondering something. "Tell ya what kid, I'm gonna give ya something for springing
the trap and unlocking this chest, but on one condition. You will never speak of this to anyone; not Brax or
your friends or family cause if you do I will personally come back and remove your tongue from your mouth with
me dagger here" She reaches into the chest and flips me a silvery coin from it. "That's mithril kid, not silver,
but mithril. More valuable than gold and even more valuable than platinum. It is your payment for your silence
understood?" "Yes, I promise. I'll tell no one of what happened tonight I swear." "Good, I trust that you won't, you are too young to die kid, now get out and never let me see you again in this
lifetime!" "Ok milady, but there is one thing I so long to know...What's your name?" She looks deep into my eyes at this
question. How risky he is to be asking me that! But what's the harm...he will never tell, at least not in the
next few weeks which is all I need to get far away from this place... "They call me Emma, short for Emerald due to me green eyes I guess. Now leave before I change my mind about this."
So I left, never to return that night. I never saw them leave and in fact it was as if they had never been
there, cept for the mithril coin I had, always hidden, always on me, making what seemed like a dream ensure that
it was indeed reality... In the next few years my sister grew up and I was able once again to travel with my dad practicing the
lock smithy trade in distant lands, making my own contacts and becoming quite a prodigy which made my father
quite proud. Always though in the shadows of my mind she was there, glistening in the candle light, those green
eyes and wry smile. Someday I will find her, capture her, tell her how I feel, and if she still wants my tongue
I will gladly give it to her...
