Lovers' Farewell

(Roleplay from Tharion Frostnova)

Yleina,

I do not know how far the news of recent days has spread but you should know that I have abandoned Aenilia and made my way to Remton. I have lost what little belief I had in the Emperor, a title which in itself is one reason why I can not respect the man. To stay in Aenilia would be an affront to my own beliefs while also giving Orphen the chance to stifle any aspirations. Defying an Emperor is a dangerous thing, made all the more so by the narrow margin of his victory.

I do not think it will be possible for me to journey into Aenilia for a long time, especially if war erupts between the realms. This is a hard thing to take as I have left behind my familiy and people that I care for. I do not know what you think of me now but I want you to know that I care for you greatly. Only once can I say that I was truly happy and that time was with you. My regret is that we have not shared more of those times, and that is down to my own fears.

I wanted you to know that.

Tharion placed the quill on the table and began to tug at the ring on his left hand, which with a little effort, slipped over his knuckle. He looked at it briefly, the small unicorn embossed in the silver of the band seemed to sparkle in the soft afternoon sunlight that shone through the window. Carefully he placed the ring and letter together and sealed them before turning to the boy who stood patiently at his door.

"Liam, you know where to take this don't you lad?"

The boy smiled and took the letter before he turned and left.

(Outside a tavern in Erahol, near the stables...)

The boy waited patiently as Yleina absorbed the contents of Tharion's letter. He was hungry but made no complaint, for young though he was, he was also aware enough to understand that there was something special between this lady and his lord. And so he kept quiet, giving her time to think about the letter, with his hands clasped in front of him and his gaze downcast. Whistling softly to himself, the boy began drawing pictures in the dirt with his foot.

By this time, the young woman had found a stool to sit on, unable to trust her feet with her mind whirling in shock, surprise, and regret. Though her eyes had mostly dried by now, she still could not believe that the love of her life was gone, and she had only just been informed. She was shocked that Tharion, such a widely respected and popular figure in Aenilia, had left Aenilia. She was surprised that the realm he joined was, up until recently, their enemy on the field of battle. And finally, she was regretful of not acting more forcefully upon her feelings for the man when he was still around.

But would it have turned out for the better if she had? For all she knew, he might have found her shyness attractive; a man of his handsomeness and renown must have had to fend off multitudes of young courtiers literally throwing themselves at him in the hopes of being wed to a former Duke and Field Marshal. Mayhaps he found her adventuring spirit and honest demeanor a refreshing change--a welcome break from having to make polite small talk about inconsequential topics with powdered-up airheads in court.

Yleina sighed heavily, letting the letter drop to her lap with leaden arms. This motion caused the open envelope already in her lap to fall to the ground. Her glazed eyes followed the dropping paper, which landed with a tiny, dusty puff of protest. Then her gaze narrowed in puzzlement as a silver object rolled out from inside.

She quickly dropped to her knees, picking up the item and wiping off some specks of dust from its surface. It was a ring, and apparently no ordinary ring, for it was adorned with Tharion's symbol and crest. Her heart swelled with indescribable passion and emotion, and her eyes filled with tears once more. Her head dropped slightly as she brought the ring up closer. She closed her eyes and kissed the ring, still kneeling on the ground, and envisioned his smiling face, burning it into her memory forever more.

Then the girl rose and tried to place the precious item upon the ring finger of her left hand, but it fit too loosely. Sighing again, she instead put it away adoringly into a small, semi-hidden pocket within her belt pouch, making sure it was snugly secreted. She would buy a silver chain later so that she could wear the ring around her neck, hidden from sight but close to her heart always.

To the boy Liam she finally spoke, as she wiped away the remaining streams of tears.

"Hey kiddo, thanks for delivering this to me. It's a long way from Remton, but I'm so glad you were able to find me."

The boy smiled sheepishly and fidgeted a bit more with his foot, but he did not offer a verbal reply.

"If you could wait a moment longer, I'm going to write a..."

A loud grumbling noise erupted from the vicinity of the boy's stomach, causing his eyes to widen in embarassment and his hands to clench at his belly.

"Oh my, haha! Are you hungry, kiddo? Here, take this and go inside to buy yourself some food. I'm going to get some paper and write a letter back to your lord in the meantime."

"Thank ye, m'am!"

The kid grinned and snatched the gold coin from the nice lady, rushing around the side of the building and raising a cloud of dust to mark his passage.

Several days later, Liam returned to Tharion with a note from Yleina.

I will love you and think of you always, my dear lord. I remain hopeful that we shall meet again some time in the future. And when we do, I want nothing more than to be enveloped in your caring embrace. I pray that you will think of me too, from time to time, but if another catches your heart, then please do not hold yourself back for fear of hurting me. Be happy, and I shall be too.

Love,

Yleina~

At the bottom of the note, next to her signature, there was a mark of a familiar unicorn in ink, as if it was pressed from a ring, and around it was drawn the outline of a simple heart, with a delicate rose lying underneath.
