Part 17: A Gruff Ordeal

(Roleplay from Irdys Galeheart)

Irdys continued to eye Xarnelf carefully. Words of gratitude... Of course, she should've thanked him and gone! She was being too distracted, too clumsy, and too afraid more questions would be asked. Really, what was the worst that could happen if they did find out? Hurt her? Kill her? She was likely to get both to happen anyway foolish as she was being...

Foolish, distracted, but still an adventurer at heart. A hand shot out smoothly to catch the purse. A slender hand, seemingly soft, although the callousing were it held a sword was clear, caught the purse deftly to drag it back under the cloak.

His words stung though. Liars? She hadn't meant to lie... What crimes had she commited that were so blatantly obvious to the Duke that she was a liar? Trespassing? Did they think her a spy? And what did his words of, it will not help you escape justice, from before mean in this light... No, she was being foolish. If he wanted her dead he could have her slain right there and then, it shouldn't matter to him.

It must just be that he hated turncloaks, that he despised those of her kind that abandonded home and heart, and even the service they were born into, to seek a better land. Was that really so bad though? Did he really mean for her to travel south again? If she was smart she knew she'd thank him and go... With the fortune supplied to her she could retire in relative luxury even. Still... The Duke strong still even in his years towering above her. She had to know;

Her voice quavered as she added hesitantly; "A liar your Grace? I, I'm sorry, my apologies. It is, I truly did wish to hail from these lands if, but, no, I realize it, it is not how it is." She cursed herself again, with her voice going from her natural gentle, sweet, and higher pithced tone to the grufness she pretended. What a craven they must think her, not even able to keep her voice steady.

Graciously stepping back, rising into a bow if the guards permitted, she added gaze still lowered;

"My greatest thanks your Grace, for your kindness. May the blade find the honour it needs in your hands, and may the blood of your enemies flow free before it. Again, I beg forgiveness for any slight I caused."

That was how she should've departed before. She cursed herself softly again, merely hoping the ordeal would end now. She'd made enough of a fool of herself...
