Azazel's Test

Milo dreamt

The Mines were under the spell of Azazel, a Demon of the old days.

Azazel said to the Baron Your Lands will be frozen in time, and every day the peasants shall wake to see an old sun. The crops will not grow, for it is winter and winter shall be forever. The mines will not yield gold, for every morning the tunnel digging will be undone. And no fish shall be caught, for it is stormy, and a stormy sea you shall see forever. You can save your land and have back time if you find something I can not accomplish for you. You can try me four times. I will come to visit in your sleep tomorrow night for the first test

In the morning Baron Milo went to the Church of Humanity, knelt and prayed in silence, as it was his custom. When he came out he was smiling. To the desperate peasants who would not want to till the land for it was pointless he said Fear not, Humanity shall prevail!

That night Azazel came in Baron's dreams and asked: Oh mortal, what can you ask that I can not accomplish? Sayeth the Baron Bless the crops of the Mines, for I want them fertile when thou shall be gone! And Azazel did it, and the land was rich and dark, and would have born fruit if only a new sun would rise. But it did not, for Azazel could indeed bless the crops.

On the next morning Baron Milo went to the Church of Humanity, knelt and prayed in silence, as it was his custom. When he came out he was smiling. To the desperate miners who would not want to tunnel in the dark for it was pointless he said Fear not, Humanity shall prevail!

That night Azazel came in Baron's dreams and asked Oh mortal, what can you ask that I can not accomplish? Sayeth the Baron Bless the tunnels of the Mines, for I want them overflowing with metal and gems when thou shall be gone!

And Azazel did it, and the tunnels were glistening with all sorts of ore and gems, but they were just under the surface and could have been dug out easily if digging would have been possible. But it was not, for Azazel could indeed bless the tunnels.

On the next morning Baron Milo went to the Church of Humanity, knelt and prayed in silence, as it was his custom. When he came out he was smiling. To the desperate fishermen who would not want to set sail because of the endless storm he said Fear not, Humanity shall prevail!

That night Azazel came in Baron's dreams and asked Oh mortal, what can you ask that I can not accomplish? Sayeth the Baron Bless the sea of the Mines, for I want it to be rich in fish and all manners of things from the sea when thou shall be gone!

And Azazel did it, and in the midst of the stormy waves one could see an abundance of fish of all sizes, so many that nets would have been unnecessary, if only the sailors could put their boats at sea. But they could not, for Azazel could indeed bless the sea.

On the next morning Baron Milo went to the Church of Humanity, knelt and prayed in silence, as it was his custom. When he came out he was smiling. Many crowded the Baron when he came out of the Church. One said Milord, we trust in you and the Baron answered Tomorrow, we shall be free..

That night Azazel came in Baron's dreams and asked Oh mortal, what can you ask that I can not accomplish? This is your last chance!

Sayeth the Baron Count me the donations in the coffer of the church of Humanity forever and for one day, Azazel, shall you? And the smile was gone from Azazel's face, and he disappeared in a puff of smoke.

To this day Baron Milo before going to sleep finishes off his daily reports, and writes the total donations to the Church in the bottom left corner of the parchment. Then, with a flourish, signs off the page and goes to sleep. How he knows what is the total without opening the coffer few know, but he is always accurate.
