Eston and Norland combined their forces to attack the fort at Elost. Nearly a thousand soldiers attacked the eight hundred defenders. The attackers took heavy casualties, with 680 killed or wounded and the Norland Hero Drojan Brakus killed. The attackers were unable to take the fort but inflicted heavy losses on the defenders. Minas Ithil casualties were 605 killed or wounded.
Reinforcements from both sides continued toward the mountainous fort as each side rallied their forces. Sunset found Minas Ithil still outnumbered with around 800 hostile troops against about 600 Minas Ithil defenders. Justiciar Katherine Yorke was captured during the battle but the walls were held and the attackers driven back. The attackers suffered casualties of 623 while Minas Ithil had casualties of 413.
