The Valiant Guard of Piety was recovered by Karden, a young adventurer who at the time was mostly known for repairing unique items, not fighting undead. However, he was on the trail of a particularly vicious bunch of undead that he had seen the day before. After defeating the first group, he saw tracks that led away into a cave.
There he encountered a group of undead led by a champion, an evil creature with more power and intelligence than the usual lot. The battle raged, and Karden focused his initial efforts on thinning out the normal undead. Luckily the champion was not able to take advantage of this opportunity, and eventually it was just down to Karden vs the undead champion. Karden's blows landed true, and in the end the champion was just a pile of bones. Amongst the pieces of gold and silver he found the Valiant Guard of Piety.
