For the majority of her history, Oritolon was governed under the [[Government System#Republic|classical republic]] system. In recent years, Oritolon has been beset by chaos as the realm has alternated between the system of old and newer, different styles, such as the complex senatorial system that collapsed spectacularly during the reign of Khain Dragonborn. Despite once again returning to classical government following several disasters, Oritolon continued to suffer instability and setbacks. Thus Oritolon once again dabbles in reform, though of a much more incremental variety than attempts of the past.

During the historical period known as '[[Oritolon (Realm)/Recent History#The Reconstitution of Oritolon|The Reconstitution of Oritolon]]' the government system was reformed with the intent of unifying Oritolon after a period of chaos and allowing more nobles to have a voice in how the realm is run.

The High Council comprises the Prime Minister, Grand Justiciar, Minister of War, Minister of Finances as well as the various Dukes of the realm. In a break from tradition, the Prime Minister is now selected from the nobility once every quarter. Meanwhile, the other permanent council members are now each chosen by the nobility once a month. The members of the High Council are advised by a group of trusted nobles known as the 'Inner Circle'. Despite the title, the Inner Circle is a large group and membership is generally open to any established noble who has a proven interest in the well-being of the realm.

Oritolon is a republic. All nobles are citizens of the republic and the government is ultimately responsible to it's citizens.

Ministries of Diplomacy, Justice, Internal Affairs and War care for the needs of the realm. They devise, debate and propose potential changes that will benefit the realm. Any noble can join a ministry that interests them.

The Senate sets the goals of the ministries, vets their proposals and enacts laws. The Senate is comprised of those who hold specific government positions and some advisers.

==The Senate==

The Senate of Oritolon is the realm's high council. It's duty is to uphold the seven great Pillars of Oritolon and so ensure the well-being of the realm.

The Senate consists of the current Ruler, Judge, General, Banker, Chief Ambassador, Head of Religion, Guardian of the Pillars and  the Dukes of Oritolon. Members of The Senate are called Senators.

There are two more senators. Known as the 'Senate's Advisor' and 'Ruler's Advisor'. The former is appointed by the Senate by majority vote and the latter by the Ruler. They are selected from the nobility for exceptional qualities that will enrich The Senate. They serve a six month term, though a new Ruler may replace the previous Ruler's Advisor before their term is served.

The Chairperson of the Senate is the Ruler by default though they delegate the role to any Senator. The Chairperson is responsible for guiding Senate debates towards a conclusion.

The Senate assists in the day-to-day maintenance and running of the Republic. All important decisions from the ministries come to the Senate for scrutiny in the form of official proposals or 'bills' and are ultimately accepted or rejected by majority vote. Accepted or 'ratified' bills enter into the law of the republic. Rejected bills may be returned to the ministry for improvement.

The Ruler has the right to veto any Senate decision but the Senate must approve any decision by the Ruler to change the realm's official diplomatic stance towards another realm or to move the realm's capitol.

The Senate can call for a Vote of Confidence to be initiated at any time for any government member. If any Senator asks for a Vote of Confidence against a government member then a vote by simple majority is held in The Senate. If the vote passes a referendum is initiated where all nobles of the realm can vote for or against the continued service of that government member.

Previously, there were long-standing conventions limiting the number of titles any one noble or family could accrue to themselves as a result of abuses and tragedies that had befallen Oritolon in the past. These conventions have since fallen out of fashion however as Oritolon has sought to ensure that the best and most committed nobles are no longer dissuaded from taking high office.

Overview

For the majority of her history, Oritolon was governed under the classical republic system.
