Marquis and Priesthood

Back to Being a Knight and not a Royal Treasurer

3 August 2008

Duke Willem,

I am hoping that I will have chance to return to being a knight of Elroth, as my family still reside there. But Marquis Kido has not responded to me in some time, and I wonder if he is not interested in my renewing my oath to him.

My alliegance is then to the Duchy of Barad Gardor, so I wonder whether you would be interested in my services direct should they be unwanted in Elroth?

Sir Crip Grindle

A Surprise Vacancy

4 August 2008

Duke Willem,

As I have been in Elroth trying to communicate with Marquis Kido, I have discovered news that he is unable to continue as Lord of Elroth. This is a great surprise, and there seems to be little news available about the reason for it.

I am aware that because he was not able to reinstate the oath I used to have with him, that I may have a lesser claim on the region than in the past, but it is still the home of the Grindle Family, and I would be honoured to take over as Lord of Elroth.

If there are others that are more suited to the position, then so be it. I would have one recommendation in that case then: that you make a request to the future lord that preaching of the Way is permitted in the region at all times. That will help spread the word of the Way, which Marquis Kido had allowed to start in Elroth already.

Once I have my future organised, I shall be turning my attentions to teaching the Way, and will welcome the opportunity to do so more in Elroth.

Sir Crip Grindle

A New Chapter

11 August 2008

Crip: Ah, Captain, good to have you here. The time has come.

Werner: Thank you, sir. I will take care of the unit well.

Crip: That you shall, I am sure. Have you come up with a new name for yourselves - and I'm hoping for something rather more professional than the Amdor Region Security Ensemble.

Werner: [chuckles at the memory] Yes, sir: Werner's Skat Militia.

Crip: [amused] Signifying the fact you spend more time playing Skat than fighting?

Werner: I do hope so, sir, yes.

Crip: Well, well. Liert, please hand the documents to the Captain, and we shall then have a drink to celebrate the start of a new chapter. Your retirement from the front lines of battle and into the front lines of Skat-playing...

Werner: And you from Royal Treasurer and Black Army member to Marquis of Elroth and Priest of the Way of the Warrior Saints.

Crip: Indeed. Cheers.

Converting 0% of the Population

13 August 2008

Haragh, Crip's servant: He's a bit tentative still, but he's managed to find a decent audience in Anfalas.

Liert, Crip's scribe: Very good. Did he get any interest? He's asked me to keep a record for a bit.

Haragh: Well, yesterday, he spent the whole day chatting to people, and I think only managed to interest two people. Today was a little more successful, he was going slowly until he found a group of women who all found it interesting. I think it was nine today.

Liert: Ok, let's see. Anfalas, Column One. Number of Interested People. 2 and 9.

Liert: Column Two. Cumulative Total to the Nearest Ten. Ten today, and, hmm, Zero yesterday. That does look a little disappointing, doesn't it.

Haragh: [grinning] At least it's not negative.

Liert: [shaking his head briefly] Indeed. Next column: Total population. What a thing to ask.

Liert shuffles through some papers, and comes up with the figure of 5298 from his latest report of the region.

Liert: And final column. Percentage of Population Converted So Far to the nearest percent. So... 2 out of 5298. That'll be... Zero. And 11 out of 5298. That'll be... Zero.

Haragh: [laughing] Oh, he'll be so glad to hear that! Perhaps you could do it to the nearest half-a-percent instead so at least it looks as if he's done something worthwhile?

Liert: [after doing some division on a bit of paper and grinning as he looks up at Haragh] To the nearest half percent, it's... Zero.

Haragh: Excellent. Oh, do have fun telling him that!

Liert: I think it's safe to say that this report will not be completed and ready for viewing for a few days yet. I suspect it won't be completed until at least a couple of percent have converted, eh?

Haragh grins and nods.
