Law of the jungle, Winkamus

The lack of pay gave birth to thoughts.Thoughts became whispers. Whispers became words of treason. Not long after the retinue began to head home, the newest and the most disloyal soldiers began thinking of way to get their pay. Jacelyn could sense it, tensions rose every day. Then, overnight, almost a third of his soldiers ran off, disappearing into the darkness. The situation became critical and worsened with every hour. They were not far from the lands of Perdan, but not close enough to make these issues stop.

"Sire? Please, Sir, wake up."

Will, Jacelyn's squire continued to shake with his liege, until he finally woke him up. He was young, maybe twelve or thirteen, who knows. He was an orphan growing up in Foxville, son of Jacelyn's father's friend. His usually cheerful and bright eyes were filled with fear and uncertainty.

Most of Jacelyn's remaining soldiers gathered around the campfire, quietly arguing and deciding what to do. The young knight sent Will to wake up the rest and silently observed the assembled soldiers.

"We have to take what is your ours!" - "Shh, don't wake them up." - "Come on, you fools. Nothing stupid or we'll all hang."

After listening to their conversation for a little while and when he saw the rest of his soldiers approaching, Jacelyn stepped out from the shadows and adressed the troubled soldiers.

"What is going on? Why are you sneaking around the camp like Yssrgardian spies?"

Rodric, an old soldier and self appointed speaker of the group froze in shock at first, but quickly recovered and approached his commander, looking him in the eyes from two feet away.

"You know we'd have followed you anywhere you went. But if you can't take care of us, you are no true commander. Give us what you owe us, boy."

"I thought the men of Bisciye were no renegades and mercenaries. Now I see I have been mistaken. I don't have the money right now, but I promise you will get everything when we reach the city!"

"HAH! You promise! We've heard enough of your promises! Give us our money, or we will take it ourselves."

Jacelyn didn't notice due to his heated argument, but the soldiers following Rodric silently surrounded them and observed the debatte. When his captain Egreda arrived with her men, they joined the circle and tried to find out what was going on. Still sleepy, undressed and exhausted, Jacelyn's remaining loyal men mixed with the rebels and threw away any chance of victory and survival.

Only at the last possible second did Jacelyn notice a dagger flying towards his chest, led by Rodric's confident arm. He tried to evade it, but didn't have enough time and the blade wounded him on his arm, slicing through his tunic and flesh underneath.

"Sire, watch ou - AAAAARGH!"

Egreda's warning became a terrible scream as one of the rebels stabbed her in the back with a spear, whilst another split her head in two with an axe. As one, the rebelious soldiers attacked the loyalist, killing them before they could draw their weapons. Rodric stabbed Jacelyn in the abdomen, and again, and again. A kick from another traitor sent Jacelyn dow to the ground, where his former men continued to kick him in the chest and head.

Before passing out, Jacelyn overlooked the scenery and shook in horror. His men, his loyal men, Duncan and Garett, Wolf and Hans, Egreda and many more... They were being butchered before his eyes, soldiers that served him well for many years, veterans of the Great northern war. He tried to look away, but then he saw Will. His young squire, his friend and follower lied on the ground next to him with his throat slit. Forgetting his pain, Jacelyn tried to crawl to him, grab him... But before his hand reached Will, Rodric stabbed him in the back with a sword and Jacelyn passed out, his blood soaking into the ground together with blood of his companions.

He woke up after a while, naked and lying on top of other bodies. The rebels left them to rot here, but first took everything of value. Jacelyn's horse, clothing, armour... He tried to get up, but crippling pain stopped him. Only now realising what had happened, something in Jacelyn's emotionless soul broke and he cried, mourning the unnecessary deaths of his friends.

He thought he heard voices and sounds of hooves approaching on the road, but passed out again before he could see anyone.
