“Deniz!”

The startled prisoner wakes from sleep, a couple pieces of straw stuck to his face from the bale that he had used as a pillow. “Huh?”

“Deniz!” yells the arch priest. “Get up, you sniveling little brat! You may have escaped my dungeon once before, but you will not do so again. I will not give you the chance.”

The Caligan prisoner can hear the sound of some heavy equipment being pulled along the ground above the dungeon. “Is that what I think it is?” asks the shackled prisoner.

“It’s Mr. Thingy II, idiot!” Is Est snarls back. “Happy death-day to you!” He commands the guards to unlock Deniz’s chains from the wall, but to keep his hands and feet bound, as he is dragged up the dungeon stairs into the light of day behind the palace in Hamadan.

At the sight of another prisoner being brought to Mr. Thingy II’s horrific blades, the gathered peasant throng erupts in cheers. “Kill him!” “Slice him to pieces!” and “Make his whole family feel pain!” are some of the cries that Deniz can make out amidst the din.

Is Est waits for the crowd’s boisterousness to calm down. It finally does, and Deniz starts to tap his foot nervously. The crowd having silenced itself, Is Est begins to address the throng:

“Good people of Yssaria! You have come today from far and wide; from Isadril, Tota, Igno, Leibo, Aureus, Supra, Mashhad, Abadan, and of course from Hamadan, our great capital city!”

“Of course, you all know that we are currently involved in a war with Caligus.” The Crowd lets out a thunderous chorus of boos, and Is Est motions them to calm down so he can continue. “Now, in war, numerous lives, sadly, must be sacrificed for the good of the whole. Many a young Yssarian has gone off to war, never to return to his family.”

The arch priest pauses for effect, then continues: “Today, good people, we have a chance to take revenge on our enemy!” The crowd lets out an enthusiastic cheer. “Today, good people, we shall witness the execution of one of Caligus’ most prized possessions! Today, good people, we shall show our enemy what happens when they try to win a war by using sneak tactics and infiltrators!”

The crowd, already stirred up, now begins to chant in unison, “Kill! Kill! Kill!” But Is Est is not finished.

“Good people, Yssaria is winning the war! Caligus is on the ropes and nearly defeated! This is what they have resorted to-” he motions to the prisoner- “an infiltrator, who will not even show his face to the light of day! They are like little kittens on the battlefield; being overrun by our swords and horsemen, so they try to sneak around and attack under cover of darkness with low-lifes like this scum!” “Today, good people, I give you another exhibition of Mr Thingy II!”

The crowd erupts into cheers once again, as the large contraption of swords, knives, scythes, and other sharp metal objects – some clean, but most rusty – is unveiled again for public display.

Part II of II:

The crowd erupts into cheers once again, as the large contraption of swords, knives, scythes, and other sharp metal objects – some clean, but most rusty – is unveiled again for public display.

“And I have a surprise for you!” shouts the arch priest, trying to be heard over the cheers. “We have added some exciting new features! Look at this!” Is Est manipulates a system of hand controls to engage the releasing of a long extension claw from the side of Mr. Thingy II’s boy of metal.

Deniz would be the first to try out Mr. Thingy II’s “Claw.” The thought of how he is about to die causes Deniz to squirm about in an attempt to get free of the guards who restrain him. On of the guards delivers a swift punch in the stomach, causing Deniz to hunch over and try to catch his breath. The other guard delivers a kick to the groin, causing the chained prisoner to fall to the ground in agony.

“Ha ha!” laughs the arch priest. “Not that his family line will be able to continue after a few minutes anyway!” The crowd is loving every minute of the anticipation. Is Est lowers the Claw to where Deniz is writhing in pain on the ground.

“Hook him up to the Claw!” shouts the arch priest. The guards place a chain from Deniz’s shackles into the Claw’s pincer, and Is Est pulls on a handle to tighten it.

“Now we shall see how infiltrators are dealt with!” shouts the arch priest, as he begins to turn a hand crank. The crowd all crane their necks to look high into the sky where Deniz now hangs suspended in midair. One peasant says, “I haven’t seen anyone that high in the air since that explosion in my barn blew the heifers sky high last fall!”

Is Est sits and waits for the crowd to get more and more enthusiastic. The more they cheer, the more he pretends to ignore them, only getting them more excited.

“Pull it!” some yell. “Drop him!” others call out. “Kill the bastard!” becomes a common chant.

Is Est raises his finger into the air to get their attention, and they all cheer wildly. He pushes forward a single lever with his finger, and Deniz begins to scream as his body plummets. The crowd is silent in awe and horror.

A loud crash and splat can be heard as Deniz’s body is impaled from the fall by a long spear. The crowd erupts into cheers again as Is Est winds up the rest of Mr. Thingy II’s saws and blades to slice the prisoner’s body to shreds. Soon the smell of blood and death fill the area, and many of the peasants begin to leave after the excitement has finished.

“So sad,” Is Est shakes his head, “no one ever wants to stay and help clean up anymore.”

“Guards!” He calls out. “Take care of this mess by nightfall. I have a lady friend awaiting me, and I must be off.” He disappears into the horizon upon his horse.

The guards look at each other in disbelief. One looks to another and says, “Lady friend, my butt.”
