Ashmoor is a region with a rich and diverse culture. Forming the northeastern most part of the large expanse of plains that begins on the west coast of Darka, Ashmoor stands out among the extreme geography that borders it. Indeed no other region can claim to share borders with the thick forests of central Norland as well as the desolate tundras of the north and the largest chain of mountains on the island of Atamara.

Ashmoor takes it's name from the forests of ash trees that once covered the territory until the forefathers of the region's current inhabitants cleared the forest for farmland. It's role as a way point in the trade of gold from the rich mines of its neighbors has made it an important trading center on the way to Brackhead. This trade has also brought many different groups of people to the region as merchants settle down to start families in Ashmoor. This has given Ashmoor's people a unique culture that blends the hearty nature of the Vikings with the more intellectual attitudes of the people of Eston as well as many other lands. This mix of cultures can be seen in the regions two recruiting centers which churn out both traditional viking spear men as well as cavalry furnished with steeds brought from the west centuries ago.

The majority of the peasants make a living through farming. Many of the young peasant men of Ashmoor enlist as infantrymen for the chance at adventure and the prospect of earning more in a month than they would in a year as a farmer. Although few of them survive to become wealthy off of their pay, most of them being farm boys that were given an axe, a shield and a suit of mail and sent forward into enemy lines, enough return to their villages with a pocket full of silver and a memory filled with gloriously exaggerated tales of their military experiences to encourage a steady stream of recruits.

The more well to do people of Ashmoor usually make their living from large ranches and stables. These people often train their sons in the art of horse riding throughout their life. This serves two roles: 1) It makes it easier for the sons to manage the herds and 2) It gives the sons a competitive advantage when applying for entry into the cavalry of Ashmoor. The herders join the cavalry for the same reason the farmers join the infantry. The cavalrymen of Ashmoor are the best paid troops in Norland. Also, where the infantrymen are usually employed by poorer knights and nobles that cannot afford more experienced soldiers, the cavalrymen are most often employed by lords and dukes who can often be helpful by providing recommendations for their appointment to important administrative duties once the cavaliers have retired.
