For Dignity, Drink, and Dames: The Road to Sirion

The young knight chuckled as his courser whinnied at a flock of starlings that rushed from a bush that ran along the the stony path upon which the nobles steadily rode.

"If I may be so bold, my Lord," the young knight began with gently-probing interest, casting a glance to Earl Orobar who rode across from him, on the other side of the even younger knight, Sir Oliver Lastar.

"The tales sung of your prowess with the sword are great indeed. How can one rise to such heights of skill and talent with a blade?"

He enquired politely, gripping the reins tighter as he flicked his gaze courteously between the Earl and the path ahead, both illuminated most brilliantly by the bright summer sun.

On the other side of the two nobles, Oliver himself rides atop his own stallion, and his ear nearly twitches with curiosity at Sir Daario's question. Oliver had somehow managed to land on the same road as the other two nobles on his way to the tournament, and he couldn't possibly give this chance up to mingle.

So, straight-backed and filling his tone with oozing courteousness, he tries to speak up for Lord Orobar first. "Ah. I'm sure my lord Orobar would be too humble to answer, Sir Daario, on the subject of his accomplishments, even as great as they may be..." Oliver is curious himself, and tries to set Tsingu up to actually politely answer. He watches the man between them out the corner of his eye.

Tsingu felt pretty damn good. There seemed to be no consequences for him personally after the events in Perdan City. There was a tournament in Sirion in a few days, which meant he could leave everything behind and enjoy the road without any duties or responsibilities lurking around. The sun was shining bright, birds sang their songs. Not a single soul in sight. This was the life. Tsingu sat back in the saddle, the steady calm pace of his stallion made him doze off. Completely at peace, he closed his eyes.

"If I may be so bold, my Lord, the tales sung of your prowess with the sword are great indeed. How can one rise to such heights of skill and talent with a blade?"

– Sir Daario

Tsingu was startled by the sudden voice. He sat up straight, the image of a voluptuous girl already fading away from his mind. Quickly wiping away some drool from the side of his mouth, he looked around to see who had the nerve to join him uninvitedly. Sir Daario Vulparan and Sir Oliver Laststar. Some of the finest young knights Perdan had to offer. They might prove worthy company on the road to Sirion. Hopefully they would stop talking once in a while though.

"Ah. I'm sure my lord Orobar would be too humble to answer, Sir Daario, on the subject of his accomplishments, even as great as they may be..."

– Sir Oliver

"Ha. Humble. I wouldn't dare. Take my advice men, if you don't tell the ladies about your greatness, they won't notice you. The humble man gets respect, I fire for effect."

Tsingu was silent for a moment, reliving several memories. A few bad, like a visit to a shady establishment in Perdan City which left him unable to ride his horse for some weeks. Most were good though.

"About your question, Sir Daario. Of course you need the talent. But mostly, it's putting in the hard work. Every single day. To be fair, I'll admit I neglected my military duties for some time, spending all my time, and my gold, training at the academy. Then I sparred with some of the best fighters around, learning from their moves. I got better to the point I could call myself a master. Now I still have to train every day, to make sure I don't get rusty. Often at night, when all is quiet, you could find me ferociously training my sword arm." Tsingu looked both men in the eye. "What about you, young knights, are you willing to do what it takes?"

The young knight cocked his head, the candidness of Earl Orobar's response taking him somewhat by surprise. An honest answer coupled with practical advice, Daario mused, a rare occurrence amongst most of the nobility in Perdan. For good reason, he concluded silently.

"Of course, my Lord," he murmured politely, nodding courteously as the Earl spoke.

"There is no greater honour than to fight for the glory of one's realm and one's house there is no doubt; in the dance of real combat on the battlefield or that which is feigned at tournament." An answer seemed unable to leave his lips, a straightforward question demanded a straightforward answer. As Daario grew in his understanding of the languages - unspoken and spoken alike - of the upper echelons of nobility, so too did his understanding of his aversion to concision.

"I have spent many dozens of hours now in the academy that sits--" the young knight paused for a moment, catching and replacing words as they try to escape his mouth, "that used to sit upon the old docks of the city of Perdan. It would be an honour one day, my lord, to witness you train your sword arm in such a dedicated and fervent manner."
