The Scrolls

Once, in this world, magic was a power beyond the grasp of any mortal man. We heard stories, of course, of backwoods witches and fearsome necromancers, of proud wizards and dubious sorcerers. We heard of these mages in the same breath as giants and snooks, dragons and demons.

But then, all at once, magic came into our world - first wreaked as powers by demons and undead, monsters who walked our lands and combatted the forces of men with otherworldly abilities. All we could do, simple creatures that we are, was to fight desperately with sword and shield and faith and somehow prevail - at great cost. Until the magic fell to us.

There can be no more singularly important moment in all of human history than the discovery of the Scrolls. Indeed, it can be safely said that if one was to pinpoint the moment where man reached a higher plane of existence, of warfare, of thought, it is the acquisition of the first Scroll. This was put best by Duke Dunbor Lorganson of Unger:

"Since time and memorial, steel has ruled these lands. It is steel that conquered the great empire of Ar Agyr and later became even deadlier in the hands of the Thalmarkinian Host. All that we have we paid for with frozen steel and stubborn minds. We have been a friend of the most noble of metals and it has been a good friend to us.

Thus it will come as a surprise to you that I am hereby declaring the failure of steel. While still being the most deadliest weapon in mankind's arsenal, steel alone will not win against beasts made of fire and death. Forever looking for more efficient ways to do our killing, our King, as advised by his Advisors, has decided to create the new title of Grand Wizard."

His Grace could not be more correct. While steel and sword is still the pinnacle of human advancement in weaponry, the Scrolls are something greater - objects of enormous power, limited in number, valuable beyond measure. Such tools are capable of changing warfare forever.

Imagine, if you will, a gridlocked war of two nations, equally matched in armies and soldiers. But then one nation discovers the fabled Summoning Scrolls and sneaks behind enemy lines, loosing a horde of undead into the opposing country.

Imagine, if your own nation is hopelessly outmatched, only to then unleash a literal Invasion of the dead into your aggressor's lands.

Imagine if all human wars are hinged upon Scrolls and that, by judicious and prudent use and deterrence, all war might cease.

This is the reality of the Scrolls. This is the great power of humanity. This is the future of war.
