Ducal Covenant of Frekpotis
In the interest of cementing the Duchy of Frekpotis as an example for all other duchies to follow, and to be the foremost duchy on Atamara, the Duke of Frekpotis and those lords undersigned agree to stand by the following principles of practice.
The central values by which the duchy of Frekpotis will be governed and led are: Loyalty, Integrity, Honor, Dependability, and an enduring focus on sustained growth and prosperity.
The nobles of Frekpotis recognize that the liege-vassal relationship comes with responsibilities and obligations upon both parties involved. What reflects upon one reflects upon the other. Therefore, it is important for both liege and vassal to build each other up in order for both to benefit from improved circumstances. Duke Merlin of Frekpotis hereby promises to abide by the following responsibilities:
1. Be a strong leader for the lords of the duchy, standing by the values and upholding the honor and integrity of the duchy and its members. Duke Merlin shall not cause dishonor to come to any of his vassals based upon his actions but in all things seek for the good of his duchy and its members.
2. Defend the lands of the Duchy of Frekpotis with an army sponsored by the Duke in allegiance to the realm which the duchy of Frekpotis calls home. The army war chest shall be sustained by ducal incomes and the army will be a symbol of strength for the duchy to have pride in.
3. Defend the sovereignty of his lords with respect to the lordship over their lands. Duke Merlin agrees to reappoint any lord in good standing with the duchy back to their lordship, should they lose their position due to capture in battle, assassination, sustained wounding in battle, or any other means beyond the control of the lord due to their service to the duchy or realm.
3a. Notable exceptions to this agreement include: Any lord who loses their region due to personal negligence under their control, disregard for their region and responsibilities, breaching of the liege-vassal agreement, or seeking to harm the duchy shall forfeit their right to be reappointed in favor of a worthier candidate.
3b. Note: Loss of a region due to military takeover by a foreign realm does not constitute negligence by the lord of the region except under extraordinary circumstances, and the lord would retain claim to the region once it is retaken.
4. Defend the honor and integrity of all lords and knights of the duchy of Frekpotis as if it were his own. Insult to any member of the duchy is an insult to the Duke of the duchy, and Duke Merlin will seek to defend all of his vassals accordingly.
5. Provide a place for knights young and old to seek learning, advancement, safety and growth in personal responsibility. As well as to foster new lords amongst the knights of Frekpotis to both ensure sustainment of good leaders for the duchy as well as the realm which the duchy serves.
6. Maintain a low level of taxation on the Lords of the duchy of Frekpotis, not to exceed 10%, without prior approval of 2/3rds of the lords of the duchy, excluding Duke Merlin. This is done with the understanding that low levels of taxation best allow the lords of the duchy to provide well for their knights and to better care for their regions in peace and war.
The Lords of the Duchy of Frekpotis in turn agree to abide by the following responsibilities:
1. Just as the Duke of the duchy provides leadership and guidance for the duchy, so too should the lords of Frekpotis provide leadership and guidance for the knights of their region. The Lords of Frekpotis shall not cause dishonor to come to any of their vassals or their liege, Duke Merlin, based upon their actions but in all things seek for the good of the duchy and its members.
2. Provide their knights and themselves to join the army of the Duchy of Frekpotis in defense of its lands and its realm. The Lord shall also ensure their knights are equipped and funded enough to be a respectable addition to the army. Under periods of distress, Duke Merlin, will aid the lords of the duchy in this endeavor.
3. Defend the sovereignty of the Duchy of Frekpotis’s continued growth and prosperity in all their actions. Lords should dedicate themselves to demonstrating Frekpotis’s contributions to their realm and being a contributing factor to its success.
4. Defend the honor and integrity of all knights of their region and Duke Merlin of the duchy of Frekpotis as if it were their own. Likewise, they should stand by all members of the duchy of Frekpotis as if they were their own knights. 8. Dedicate some amount of surplus funds towards the expansion of the infrastructure of their region and maintenance of said infrastructure. It should be the goal of all lords to have the best possible infrastructure and recruitment centers available to them. Likewise, they should contact Duke Merlin for suggestions as to what the duchy may need if they have the funds available for such expansions. In addition, Lords with excess funds are encouraged to help the growing strength of the duchy by seeking out which other regions could use that funding help and to cooperate in building a stronger duchy.
All members of the duchy of Frekpotis recognize that in order for the duchy to grow, succeed, and prosper that we must all work together and cooperate towards that end. It is important then to respect the fellow members of the duchy and treat them as such, as to do otherwise would hinder the goals set forth in this accord.
