Part 18: The Underlying Impression

Caught off guard by Irdys's quavering and unexpected response, the duke tried to figure out what had caused such a volatile reaction. Then it dawned upon him, as he replayed a tell-tale phrase in his head: 'I truly did wish to hail from these lands if, but, no, I realize it, it is not how it is...' So the man simply wished to be known as an adventurer of Aenilia instead of Soliferum. Well, that was easy enough to establish but generally involved quite some paperwork, knowing how bureaucrats are.

So, the situation was just a misunderstanding concerning the way that the word 'hail' was being used. While Xarnelf had taken it to mean the actual birthplace, Irdys seemed to use it interchangeably as both birthplace and realm of service, or in other words, home.

The duke began to form a suitable response, but before he could voice it, the commoner spoke first, voicing his gratitude again in a humble manner. Xarnelf allowed the man to finish before smirking and saying lightly:

"It would appear that I have been misunderstood. I was under the impression that you wished to speak of Aenilia as your place of birth, which is clearly untrue. If, however, what you meant to say was that you wish to speak of Aenilia as your home, or your realm of residence, then I surely have no problem with that arrangement.

"Besides, if you wish to make a name for yourself as a skilled hunter and defender of the peasants, you will first need to register your name with the bureaucrats who oversee the adventuring licenses of Aenilia anyway. There should be an office somewhere in the city, and I am sure you are resourceful enough to find its whereabouts. You are surely free to hunt without registering, but if you do indeed intend to make Aenilia your new home, then speaking with the bureaucrats will ensure that you will meet with less opposition in your efforts. Such a license will also give you concrete proof of any future claims you may choose to make in naming this realm as your home."
