A few members of the family during it's long and largely undistinguished history have put their hands to trade, artisanship, or old fashioned banditry, generally without much success. The land has always been their salvation and support.
Through hard work and occasional good luck, some branches of the family have prospered enough to send the recent generations of sons out to the world to become soldiers.
