Battle in Rettlewood - Cedric 1.jpg

The air hung heavy with the scent of damp earth and the metallic tang of spilled blood. A grim silence had settled over Rettlewood, broken only by the mournful creak of ancient trees and the soft whimpers of the wounded. I, Cedric Highvale, knight of D’Hara, stirred amidst the carnage, my body wracked with pain. As I pushed myself to my feet, the full extent of the slaughter became sickeningly clear. My once proud Emerald Blades, forty-four strong, were now scattered across the forest floor, their lives extinguished in a tide of monstrous fury. Their vibrant green cloaks, once symbols of hope and valor, were now stained crimson, a testament to the brutality of our defeat.

Mere days ago, we had been feasting in the great hall of Paisly, the laughter and merriment echoing through the ancient stone walls. We had just left to rejoin the army in Celtiberia when I received the news, whispered urgently by a soot-streaked messenger - tales of monstrous creatures terrorizing the humble folk of Rettlewood, their cries for aid echoing through the surrounding lands. As a bannerman of D’Hara, duty compelled me to answer their pleas. Despite the warnings of my advisors, who spoke of the monsters' fearsome strength and the treacherous terrain of Rettlewood, I rallied my Emerald Blades, our hearts filled with righteous fury. We marched into the forest, our banners held high, our resolve unwavering.

Now, the wind whispered through the shattered branches, carrying with it the echoes of the battle. The clash of steel, the guttural roars of the monsters, the desperate cries of my men – all replayed in my mind, a haunting melody of despair. Fourteen brave souls had been lost, their lives offered up as a sacrifice to the insatiable hunger of these cursed monsters. Twenty-eight more lay scattered amongst the fallen, their bodies broken and bloodied. Each fallen soldier was a dagger in my heart, a reminder of my failure as their commander. My own armor, once gleaming proudly in the sunlight, was now battered and torn, a reflection of my own shattered spirit. A deep gash on my shoulder pulsed with agonizing pain, and my head throbbed with the memory of a monstrous blow.

Yet, even amidst the despair, a flicker of defiance remained. I would not allow this defeat to be the end of the Emerald Blades. We would rebuild, we would return, and we would avenge the fallen. The monsters may have won this battle, but the war was far from over. With a heavy heart, I knelt beside the fallen, offering a silent prayer for their souls. Then, summoning the last of my strength, I turned my back on the battlefield, rallying the injured to leave, my eyes fixed on the horizon. The road ahead would be long and arduous, but I knew in my heart that the Emerald Blades would rise again, stronger and more determined than ever before.
