Sage crafting Elemental Gauntlets

Escent, of the house of Noble, crafted the Elemental Gauntlets after finding a Sage in Latlan on Beluaterra. In 2007-03 a noble of Mesh, who wished to remain unknown, purchased the Elemental Gauntlets for the sum of 75 gold.

(The accounting of the crafting of the Elemental Gauntlets as penned by a local bard and given by oral account by Escent, of the house of Noble)

The two had been searching for months. The rumors of a sage living among the caves, near the shores of Latlan had been true. They had stayed with him a few days enjoying the rest from the constant battles and the cold nights. Often the sage spoke about things they did not understand but when he spoke about being able to craft items fit for a king they took notice. Many things were needed and he made them memorize the list so that the secret of requirements would not easily pass to those he did not trust.

For some time now the two had been traveling together, becoming companions and steady friends that each knew they could count on no matter the need. As they set out from the cave they had split up for a while to cover more ground while they searched but always they thought of each other. Several of the items they had already but some would take them a long time to find, if ever. And so, their search for what the sage had asked of them lead them across three kingdoms and countless battles with monsters and the undead that seemly sprung up from the ground at every turn. High up on a mountain side in a small cave, lit by the light of a small lamp it waited. And as Talika drew near she knew at last, the final requirement was found. A sapphire of a deep hue that drew ones gaze with a beautiful inner glow. The sapphire had a small crack running through one outside edge but Talika and Escent were hopeful that this would be enough.

That was almost a month ago now and the companions were reunited once again and carefully making their way back again to the coast line of Latlan and into the small cave where the old sage lived. A faint smell greeted them as they approached the mouth of the cave. As they entered, the scent of pine struggled to mask the smell of the fish cooking over the small fire. Had he known they were coming, how could that be possible?

Without a word a frail old man slipped from the shadows of a side chamber and quietly and gestured towards a table in the back of the main chamber. Without hesitation Escent and Talika set all of the items that had been collected before the sage who smiled and steepled his fingers in thought. Disappearing again the sage emerged with pack full of tools and he quietly set about his work. Not knowing what to do the two adventures sat quietly tending the fire and preparing a simple dinner. Talika set a plate near old man who barely seemed to notice, lost in his work.

Deep into the following afternoon the sage was putting away his tools when Escent woke to the roar of the waves crashing very near the mouth of the cave. Startled by the spray of the waves crashing over the lip of the cliff edge Escent jumped a bit and smiled as Talika stirred next to him.

Shuffling over to the companions the sage spoke for the first time since their arrival. "I once worked for nobles of many kingdoms and lands. Far and wide my skills were known and often were my services called upon to craft fair things of beauty. But, as the years past those nobles seemed to care less about beauty and more about power and war. At first I was happy to ply my skills and earn their gold and favor, and such wonderful spears and swords did I craft!" Escent smiles as he sees a twinkle of pride flash in the old mans eyes and Talika sits up enraptured at the story.

"But one day the war of the nobles came to my home. My village was burned, my family killed and my relatives spread like chaff into the wind. They had done nothing wrong and were innocent. My heart broke knowing that I had made many of the weapons these supposedly noble men carried into battle." The sage hangs his head and his shoulder slump as he pauses, lost in a memory of a time long since past.

Raising his head once more the sage shakes his head and his eyes see clearly once more. "Long has it been since these hands have had work beyond turning pages of a book and I thank you for believing in this old man. I no longer care to make weapons of war but the sapphire was large enough to split and set into these gauntlets which will go to you, Escent as long as you write these words on your heart and live them out" The sage tilts his head slightly to one side and looks Escent directly in the eyes. "A man's character is what makes him noble, and character is how a man conducts himself when nobody is watching him. Do not let yourself become like the nobles I once knew, do not grow haughty and prideful. For, Escent, all of us will one day pass into the pages of history. Live your life so that the story written about you when you’re gone is one worth reading."
