Man came to Beluaterra from across the Western Ocean and with them brought their gods and their ways. But before the coming of man other creatures called this place home, those of alien form and mind men call monsters and they are the Children of the Old Gods. The Old Gods remain masters of the land watching the movements of man and beast for reasons unfathomable; and though men of different kingdoms may call upon them with a verity of names they have no true identity that can be perceived by mortals.
The existence of the gods was discovered by Man long ago and then forgotten by the refined nobles who followed the gods of their homelands across the sea. But the peasants remembered and paid homage to the gods in and effort to appease them and lessen their wrath. So it was not surprising that in the harsh north the nobles of Melhed learned of the Old Gods and the true meaning of the war with the Children. Thus Melhed came to realize that for Man to truly control the continent they had to win the love of the Gods and the war with the Children began in earnest.
In times past Humanity came to the unknown lands from across the Western Ocean. Seeking a new life those first colonists made a home amidst the wild forests and fertile plains; but they were not alone. The survivors of those days returned to the east with tales of hideous abominations alien in form and mind that stalk every shadow and call every forest and mountain theirs. These monsters did not suffer kindly the tread of human interlopers and so the land came to be known by these dreadful beasts Beluaterra - Monster World.

But Humanity is tenacious and returned again and again, with their gods and their ways, always seeking to tame the wild lands. This fleeting goal is thwarted at every turn for the Monsters are not alone; for they are the Children of the Old Gods.

The Old Gods of Beluaterra are the true masters of the land, holding absolute dominion over every rock, tree and beast. Called by many names these beings are the final arbiters of Humanity's fate upon this continent for it is by their whim that peace reins, or blood flows.

There is still hope. The Old Gods test their Children against the encroaching humans, testing each to see who is the greater. Thus the Followers of the Old Gods know that Humanity can earn the love of the Old Gods. For Humanity is the greater race that will vanquish the Children and claim dominion absolute over all of Beluaterra.

The Followers will triumph over adversity through the strength of the human spirit.

The Scintillating Mystery is inscrutable. Cloaked in both shining radiance and blackest night, the patron of thieves passes judgement with whispered words. Many a weary wanderer has found their travel delayed by the Hidden Thunder, or their purses lightened by devotes. Yet the Eternal Watcher demands balance in such acts, with aid given to those lost, and charity to those in need. The Pale Wanderer whispers in the dark that peace will come at the end of all. Granting her dark champions knowledge and the tools of civilization, the Kind Mother seeks to ease our lives amidst the chaos of nature. But when we can struggle no more, the Soul Shephard brings us to her mountain kingdom for eternal rest. For the Goddess of death is the kindest of all. The unmoving monarch of the frozen lands, the Ice Queen embodies the inevitable return of winter from the reprieve of summer. She is a grim and cold ruler, untouched by pleas or actions, be they good or ill. Her capricious nature brings rewards seemingly at random, yet always in service to some end that only she can see. From her throne of ice she oversees all that occurs and all that must occur, the weight of fate holding her to the cycles. Speaking in prophecy even the other Gods find her words bring confusion, so only the few enlightened minds can grasp at the truth. The Verdant Lord commands the living to struggle, and expects to be obeyed. The Harsh Father tests all beings without pause, and has no pity for the weak. Prayers and pleas are scorned, while boons fall on those of merit who toil. The bounty of harvest is bought in sweat, summer's heat paid in blood, and those who shed tears at the cruelty of life are mocked. The guidance of the Brutal Gardener transforms the meek into the strong and pits the white champions against the dark. Star Thief meddles unceasingly in the fates of mortals and Gods alike, unmaking the weave of fate for both good and ill. Prayers are always granted by the Sparkling Trickster, but the unworthy receive what they ask for, instead of what they want. Such is the way of the Twinkling Gaze, a creature of chaos who delights in games of chance.
