From the Notes of Aurelius Madigan, Grand Wizard of Thalmarkin and of the Order of the Cold Flame
Measuring a foot-and-a-half in either direction and weighing as much as a small shield, the Compendium is undoubtably anything but an ordinary book. The bindings seems to be constructed from an unknown material, the cover and backing are incredibly study and rigid, and the paper itself is of a finer make than even the finest manufacturers of our capitol could produce.
The book is bound and lined a creamy white, of surprising pleasantness of texture, and bares the name "The White Compendium of Haste" on both the front and spine of the tome. There are, at a rough estimate, perhaps eight hundred to a thousand pages in the Compendium, all written by the same hand. The script is a dark green ink - a shade away from black - and is written in a skilled and flowing style, by an individual of outstanding and beautiful penmanship. Unfortunately, only the latter fourth of the text is easily read - for the rest is in a multitude of languages lost or dead. These last two hundred pages or so are written in the Common Tongue, though it begins in a more archaic fashion.
In addition to being a wondrous object and perhaps the most beautiful book I have seen in my time, the Compendium has the curious and documented effect of giving its owner the gift of haste and alacrity. I had asked my steward to time the number of arrows I would loose at a target in a minute first without the book and then with the book nearby. To my surprise, I found I had loosed twice as many arrows with the book at my side. I will be sure to keep it with me in coming battles"
Addendum: After I was wounded in the Battle against the Overlord in Unger, I woke to discover my Compendium was gone. I lament the loss of such a collection of knowledge and esoteric history and will stop at nothing to see it found.
