The Fall

Cross the channel between Abilotiel and Sanzzos in the winter was always a cruel task. But now the Lord had return to his region and in that fall of afternoon and beginning of night he sat down with his son at the doors of his house to admire the new decoration in the palisades: monster carcasses. Ossaet had fallen and the dispute would happen among wild dogs.

Young man: "Father, you are the richest and powerful man that I know. You were the dream that your servants dreamed. Why to give up now? You fought more than any man in this continent. Will they never recognize that?"

Gregor Eyolf: "And for why would I wait those men's recognition? Those are not our lands. You remember the White City. When you was just a child and me, a true hero. Now I am exiled here in the mud without never have seen a war worthy of me again. Do you think I need recognition of those Lords and Dukes? Those that struggled at my side died. The only recognition that matters now is yours."

Young man: "You seem now a sad man, father. I remind when you brought war spoils and hugged my mother after a good battle. You are strong like a bear, but I don't see the shine in your eyes. Legends don't know the age."

Gregor Eyolf: "And do you think they know? Do you think they respect the legends? We chose the easiest road. For me and for them. One day you will have your wife and your children and then you will understand. My time ended. I am a dead one for those men that don't know who I am. I went a God in Ikalak. The Dream of Papania. But here, for Ohnarians... I am just a good Lord that facilitated their life. That allowed them to march in Ossaet without I had to squeeze them with my war hammer. They fill my ears with beautiful words to get what they want. And I gave this to them."

Young man: "March now to Ossaet. You fed that people. They will recognize you Lord before an election can be made. You can buy the title that should be yours."

Gregor Eyolf: "To be banished and leave that a stupid Knight assumes Abilotiel? To drag you and our family to a new life among men that care less with who we are? I don't have age to be foolish anymore. I will be here and demand of them that the title of Abilotiel is yours when I finally meet the death. Then you will be able to make everything that you want. And you can follow your own road, a victorious one."

Young man: "You taught me to seize a sword... I will protect our family if something happens to you. Why not struggle?"

Gregor Eyolf: "Because I am the Lord Gold. I fed the people and I went their dream. But I abandoned them. I can convince them to serve me again. I can buy them because I am their dream. Not a dream of some Ohnarian that never struggled for being involved too much in their own problems. In their revolts. I will struggle when they stop crying and look to the world like it should be seen. When they find true enemies, not the opportunity in a dream cut into pieces and easy to conquer. You think that the next Duke of Ossaet will really have some merit in that conquest? Here they at least have Knights to serve their regions. They never had to climb mountains to face a powerful enemy and they never dreamed march in a city dominated by a true warrior realm. Here everything is small and without any value. They are the winter. Nothing grows and prospers here. But they waited the right moment to get more. That is the merit of a politic, not a warrior's merit."

Young man: "But you received a letter of Sir Remorse, your old Knight. And the revolts began in the Dark Isle..."

Gregor Eyolf: "And I imagine how many realms he will have to destroy to find peace. Some men don't know how to build things. They are the fire of the revolution, but when they get something, they don't know what to do. They are the destructive fire and I am the fire in the fireplace that heats up and protects the people in a winter night."

Young man: "But, father..."

Gregor Eyolf: "No more tears, my beloved young warrior. The destiny is the destiny."

Wife, approaching: "And the soup is ready. You cannot talk with the tongue burning. Now enter and rest you two. I also want your father's attention this night."

Thwarted, the youth warrior entered the house. Gregor lifted up and hugged his wife with a sweet kiss.

The destiny is the destiny.

Always.
