A Family Matter

Erik let his city walking down the marble stairs to the river where the boat was waiting for him. Behind them the harems, the great temple, sumptuous gardens and statues were evidence of the pharaonic scenario he was building around himself. His blood was stronger in Sirion after every new morning. His children brought his name to new positions ruling lands in Dolmbar, Trinbar, Al Amarah and Avamar. Now he would discover if his only daughter with pure elvish blood would have the same power to bring more honor and glory to the new House.

Erik Eyolf: “Eyolf Serpentis. Mercury Serpentis. Blakeshadow Serpentis. Sounds good. Generations with my name and my blood to rule my realm. This is more than any one already made. Reborn in the name of my lineage, different of the old mummies chained to the power they have achieved. Men and elves can suffer with death and old age. The lineage of a God stands forever.”

He looked at the river, feeling the gentle waves. In the distance he saw a group of great egrets hunting on the banks. He judged a good augur the visage of a lynx leaning to drink water. The two stared at each other and the animal looked away. That was a pleasant travel until Al Amarah. One of the servants at the docks threw the ropes and then Erik jumped to the boardwalk, giving a handful of silver coins to some children there to take care of the boat. In an elegant black vest he passed almost unnoticed, dismissing servants or bodyguards. However, after a few murmurs the lone elf was recognized, walking through the village, observing closely the reforms after the conquest of southern territories. The Silver Dragon was known there and the bards still sang about how he had risen from the ruined walls and kicked the last stones before the lootings and take over the town.

While Judge one of his policies was always sending masses of loyal immigrants to the new shattered lands. They would merge cultures and in the end these settlements became completely loyal to Sirion. There he could be seen as a ruthless conqueror, mainly because of his links with the region and the devastation of Negev caused by his blood. However, hatred and love always went with Erik and happy faces approached offering fresh bread and other delicacies. A horde of kids ran after him, astonished they stole black cloths from the clotheslines to form their own rank of Stormwalkers with wooden swords and old spoons. Passing by a stable he saw a squire receiving a punch while the men ran and knelt, offering a good horse. A noble of such importance should not walk like that through the common people.

Riding, Erik left the tumult behind and stormed the fields to the main property. He let the employees to approach to care of the horse as he was led inside. Few people in Sirion had authority to stop him from going where he wanted. Even peaceful as the face of a lake, his word was iron. The servants ran in front of him, but in the end he surprised the women and children while they talked.

Erik Eyolf: “Lady Marion... Lady Rugina... what a pleasant surprise. Where’s my little wing? I think now she is old enough to recognize her father.”
